  • My timing belt

Thought I’d share a picture of the timing belt on my 3B.
the car has 96k on the clock, been stood a long time, no record of a timing belt change in the service history.
think its literally hanging on by threads
not going to touch the bottom or top end pullies, just replace the water pump, idler pulley and the belt.

Strewth! I've never seen one as bad as that before. I wouldn't risk cranking the engine until after you've replaced the belt and ancillaries.

            I know ! I thought blinkn hell,
its the worst I’ve seen aswell, I’ve actually had it started up to move it around the garage
Certainly looks like its been on since 1992 heh,
            Still tight though surprisingly.

With the car standing for a while without it being fired up I’ve got a noisey tappet,
Will it correct itself or will I need to inspect?

The noise didn’t go away in the two minutes it was running?

After changing the oil and filter (and timing belt!) I'd be for giving it more than a few minutes to sort itself out !...……… only one tappet, you've got off lightly!

                Heheh,
well, I say one, it could be a couple,
I usually disconnect the main coil lead and turn it over for a bit, then start it up,
still get an initial rattle though,
But this time it hasnt gone completely and sounds like one, or two,
but yeah, I’ll give it a chance once I’ve given it the service

P.S. Noisy tappets like that rarely go away sitting at idle, a few miles at 2-3000rpms should sort it out though.

Yep get it out for a run for a good hour or two and the engine will be pleased, they don't like short drives.
