    Cylinder Died

    Hi guys,

I was waiting for the girlfriend, with the s2 idling by, when the revs dropped suddenly and the car began to rumble in a menacing way.

I set off, giving it a few revs thinking it had messed up whilst idling, and found that my lovely 20v quattro has turned into a f***ing subaru!!!!

Thanks to 4WheelDrifter's Road Side Recovery™ i found that cylinder 2 isnt firing. The gf wasn't very happy that we were somewhat stranded, 20 miles from home, but i assured her if one of her cylinder's stopped working i'd be just as concerned!

I ended up leaving the car at a mates garage and phoning a friend (house mate) to bring my trusty Renault Clio through to get me home.

My best guess is something coil pack related, although i hope its as simple as oil on the spark plug

Stu says that the OEM ones are the best, but are not cheap.

Are there any good alternatives, and does anyone think a homefried ABY needs an "uprated" coil pack?

    Cheers

Most likely you just lost a POS channel. If it was 4 or 5, you get a freebee but you say it's no. 2 so no such luck.

Here is some POS info that might help you sort it out:

http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/149771.phtml (and then follow the hyperlinks inside that one)

Hope that helps. In the meantime, if you drive the car, disconnect the No. 2 injector to stop fuel from spraying into the cylinder and washing the oil off.

Andy, If you have not done it already, check the condition of the spark plug in that cylinder, (Well ALL of them actually) I had a similar thing when one of my plugs worked loose. If you are lucky it will missfire first.

      Just a thought.

Otherwise a s UrS4Boy rightly points, out it will be a POS or a coilpack. There are loads of write ups on here detailing how to test them.

Shouldn't be a massive job, coil packs are a few quid and I can't remember how much a POS is (or if they're available to buy new?). You don't need any kind of uprated coils for a remapped ABY and I would steer clear of the 1.8T conversion as heat appears to be a massive problem.

Easy to say, but you have to make up new looms for the new Coilpack so they are a bit of a pain in the ****!

          Good luck Andy.

Andy let me know if it's a coil pack issue, have my Avant coilpacks sat in the garage. 90K miles but the engine was running strong with them. May need 'em back eventually but might just run with the 034 high-output coils.

I think we have a new forum phrase for a sick engine - "my motor has gone for a burton"...

This one sounds like plug/coil/POS/bad connection as suggested already - for it to happen quickly like that just sat idling.

                Nice usage!

Its been plugged into a system that shows a load of graphs relating to the power cycles this morning - it seems to be the coil pack, which were going to swap with a different cylinder to confirm, but how do you remove a coil pack because they all seem to be linked together?

Also, can you just change to the "spare" POS channel to test?

                Cheers!

SOnic - I would NOT condemn the coil pack until you have proved its not the POS... Swap BOTH connectors over on the POS units and test again.

                        Say its -
POS-A for 1-2-3 normally and POS-B for 4-5-spare, swapping them gets you running with
                        POS-A for 4-5-spare and POS-B for 1-2-3

If problem coil moves from 1 to 4 / 4 to 1 or 2 to 5 / 5 to 2 then you have found your bad POS channel
If your real lucky and its #3 on POS-A that is dead then it should fix when you do the POS swap to POS-B!
If neither of the above happens then you most probably have a dead coilpack.

Changing one coil pack is a PITA - lots of fiddly wires interwoven together and risk of damage to other aging wires. If one coil pack really is dead then I'd bite the credit card and get a set of five.

NOte - there is a white plug and a black plug on the POS units - you need to swap the BOTH over for this test - swapping just one gets your firing order messed up so label the boogers if in any doubt or asking someone else to do it.

Oh as another sanity check - have all the plugs pulled and compared - and get a compression test done just in case - 15 mins effort.

Thats top quality info - cheers Paul

Its in a trusted garage now and ive given them that info to diagnose whether its a POS. I guess then i'll know whether i need a new set of coil pack's or a POS.

They have the POS units on VAG Parts for 92.85 each, i guess id have to order 5x coilpacks at £120 each from Audi?

I guess i'll be tapping Ross up for his old set
