Golf GTi MkII 8v... What To Do - Upgrades ?????

    Off topic question..

But I have broad enough shoulders to take the flak that's coming my way for this....

As some of you know I have just bought my Son his first car...

A Mk2 Golf Driver for £360.00 of Fleabay....

It's a fantastic car.... Tons of history... Every bill including ones for bulbs since 1993... All the MOT's since 1997...etc and I have been driving it around for the last few weeks and have fallen in love with it....AGAIN.

I had a Mk2 GTi which I gave to a mate of mine...but he got done for DD... and the car ended up on my drive rotting away as I had an RS6 and S4 Cab at the time.. then two lads turn up and offered cash for it and I SOLD IT... My mate was going to make up the short fall..... but I am still waiting.... Friends ehhhhh

So after all this rambling bullocks I have now decided to sell the wifes Ford Fiesta ST150 with 18K (anyone interested PM me Looking for about 8.5K One owner etc) as she is getting 40mph, which shows she can't drive a Real car properly (as I only get 25mph out of the same spec car)....

And buy another classic car..... a Mk2 Golf Small bumpered 8V GTi....

what I want to know is apart from the obvious Alloy wheel addition which I have already bought... Orginal BBS RA's on 15's...

What other "upgrades" would you guy's suggest....

Bear in mind I can be (analretentive) Or retarded and want to keep the car as ORGINAL as possible...

As these cars seem to be really holding or increasing in value...

    Without ruining/spoiling the car....

    All Sugestions Welcomed...

    Ken....

    Been On The Vodka AGAIN!!!!

      IMHO upgrades:
      1) Lowered suspension for handling
      2) Bigger brakes from G60
      3) Full engine head porting/ servicing

      P.S. What engine code ?

I would massively suggest a bit brake conversion and subtle lowering, I know you want to keep it original but the brakes are a bit pony in Mk2 GTI's. Mk3 VR6's offer all the bits you need, however you will need 16's at minimum !

I'd also suggest a strut brace in a big way, my last GTI (I've had 3) was incredibly flexy and had very uncommunicative steering until I put one on. You can get ones for the front struts and one which goes in the boot, the boot one was very good !

Then if your feeling it sort an exhaust out (I had a custom made LongLife Stainless, I'd recommend them to anybody!), and you've got a sweet little Mk2

Shameless plug here...(www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk is a great site, not that I'm an Admin or anything...)

You can use your old twin pot s2 brakes on the mk2 with 280mm G60 discs. Cheap big brake upgrade if you still have your old brakes. I did the same on mine and they fit under 15's. So you can keep the standard look as well.

2.0 8V bottom end, 270 cam, flowed head, ashley exhausts manifold, weber 38DGAS with conversion plate. A mate was runnign this setup in his Scirocco and it flew! 140+bhp on the rollers. Nice to keep it carb too. Brakes wise you want the 16v hubs so you can bolt on either the G54s with 256mm discs for 14" wheels or with 280s and the G60 carriers for 280s. The old Girling G60s can also be used.

So amny options for bodywork, I like the small bumper design as it's classic, big bumper conversions were all the rage in the 90s with people making their cars look newer but that's not going to work nowadays. Single headlamp grille, crosshair lights, 16v rears... I could go on all day with this one, this was my 'education' 1990s golf tuning mags

Never been a fan of the single light grilles myself, I had a single on my last 8V and hated it, swapped it for a double as soon as. Also from a practicality point of view the headlights are nothing short of awful without a double light grille...

Hella did genuine smoked rear lights which look really smart. I've still got this set (kept them because they were in such good nick!) in the garage if you want to make an offer...

                    1 - Peed off feela

Drove all the way from Sheffield to Northants to look at a so called mint Golf GTi 8 Valve with small bumpers with FSH, No power steering, really mint car.. no rust.... Limited edition dark green colour... alloys etc.... 130 mile trip.....

Got there... the car has rust in the usuall places, bottom of the doors (only one side)... under the rear bumper.. nothing new there.... cars 20 year old so OK.... stuff happens....

The woman selling it keeps banging on about this FSH... so I look through the book and its ONLY got histort till 95K car shows 110K so I asked wheres the rest... she says I didn't get it serviced... Duh.....

Take the car out for a test drive he steering wheel is a good 20% off center.... so I ask has it been kerbed or in an accident... she say I've never noticed it.... WTF....

So I thinks ok - women!!!... Lets have a look at the the engines and underside..... to find that the car is ******* out oil all over the timing belt and dripping off the main block...

I point this out & she pipes up "I know about cars and its nothing to worry about as it passed it MOT only a month ago"...... WTF agian.....

Needless to say I said thanks but no thanks..... The wife is very peed at me as she thinks its a waisted day.....

So I bought her a choccy bun and a drink on the way home!!!!!

Still no GTi.... and £30.00 of fuel waisted.....

Anyone know of a nice Mk2 GTi 3dr pre big bumper for sale??????

Sorry Jamo.... I Miss Mine Tooo

                      great fun engine/car.

think others have it already here. port and a cam and a tune does wonders. my mate has just sold the engine from his mk1 cammed ported 138hp on the sheet. it went well.

after that level of power its engine swap. turob on an 8v is a waste of time.

                        If it was me,

whichever one you buy, I would suggest to get one with power steering ?

You'll never want to remove it, but you will most likely wanted to retro fit it after a while, if the one you buy hasn't got power steering?

                        IMHO.

                        Kind regards.

I know what you mean.... The Driver I bought my lad doesn't have it... the only place you need it is when parking....

If it has it fitted then fine... If not then so be it....

IMO there's more to worry about than power steering.....

Like Nice alloys to make it lighter!!!!...

i got some fk konigsports from my corrado here if they may be needed.

i like my 16v but the 1.8t is a great engine and as proven can run low 9's on standard management.
