I still need to have a look at using the 90 style of opening, i.e. using the lock to activate the release...

Bear with me here. When you look at the mechanism, you'll see that the lock pushes a bar which slides a nylon bushing along a slot. When unlocked, this bushing is in front of what I'm calling the striker, which when you pull the handle, pushes the bushing and releases the latches.
There's about 5mm between the striker and bushing, which makes up for a lot of slack in the handle. Once the handle is out, wedge it open (I used a wheel bolt) to give access to the striker. Then drill and tap a hole through it. It's aluminium and sprung from the side so be careful. Put a machine screw Or small bolt in the hole you just tapped. Now release the wedge and try the handle again. Voilà ! No slack and no rod adjustment required.
If anyone's got a pic of a handle mechanism I'll point out where to drill.Audi S2:

Another way to take up slack is to put a small length of silicon tubing over the sliding bush, which makes it "fatter".
I got that idea from someone else on here, only takes a minute to do, and no need to drill anything.
I guess both ideas do the same thing but in different ways.
As for the using the 90 lock idea, it could be a no go.
Apparently the saloon has a single catch in the middle

Thats true, but I guess where there is a will, there is a way! Only problem being the barrel would need stripped and re built with the internals of the original lock so as to not have two keys!Comment

I thought about that but was worried it would fall off! Could glue it I suppose.Another way to take up slack is to put a small length of silicon tubing over the sliding bush, which makes it "fatter".

As for the 90 lock, I'm sure I could rig something up with a section of bike brake cable! Is it a push or a twist release?Audi S2:

Cheers dude. Yeah the car was for sale, then I changed my mind! Might be for sale again soon though (once it's been to MRC). My wife is pregnant (our 2nd) and I'm thinking a 95 million pound per week fuel bill could probably be better put aside to help compensate for 9 months of statutory maternity pay!Audi S2:
