Audi uk have an s2 on a p-reg that's a 1996 but that doesn't mean it was produced in 1996! On ford cars where you get the colour code it has a letter and a number (e6 is ink blue for example) and the 6 of that part represents the year 2006. I've seen a car made in 2003 but it's on a 54 plate not sure on audis but I bet it's on the data sticker in the boot
My very good friend Kate, has some info that might help. But before we get there, there is a difference between build year, model year (MY) and registration year. Typically Audi ran on a model year that ran from July or August (depending on when the factory took their month holiday) of the start of the model year, e.g. in 1992 for the 1993 model year, and then kept building until June the model year, e.g. June 1993 (still a 93 MY/spec car).
The last S2s were built in 1995 but because they were built in the late summer and fall of 1995, all the way to Dec. 1995, they are (or should be) 1996 model year cars with a "T" VIN. (See jpg attached).
The *exception* to this rule was with the USA-bound 96 MY/spec UrS6 sedans and avants. Technically, the 1996 MY was to be the first year of the 2nd generation of On-board Diagnostics (OBD II) in the US. However, Audi didn't want to go to the bother of developing the OBD II system for the AAN because they were planning the new C5 cars that would used a V6 or V8, i.e. our beloved AAN (and ABY and ADU) was dead to them. The upshot of all this was for the UrS6s destined for the US in the fall of 1995, instead of building them as 1996 cars, they built them as "1995.5" cars with an SN VIN number from July 1995 to December 1995. But after that, no more UrS cars for the US.
In contrast, in Canada, where the OBD II didn't come into play until 1998, the Canadian-bound 1996 MY (spec) cars, built on the same line as the "SN" 1995.5 US bound cars, were VIN'd TN. We also got 1997 spec UrS6's in Canada (VIN "VN" (they all skipped "U" for some reason).
See the attached S2 info. Let us know if your VIN fits in the month range that they say it should.
Certainly fits for my car. It means it was built in November '95 and the Dealer registered it in April '96 & I know it was a special order colour.
Over the years I've had parts off the car many of which have individual build dates on them, mostly 1995, non 1996 and some trim items as far back as 1992!! I know they are parts originally fitted when it was built as I've owned it since it was 6 months old.
I have a late S2 1996, (vin ending in 2000) but I notice that they go upto 3000, does this mean that another 1000 were built after mine, or are they all different models.
