Std S2 Avant Vs Modified Evo VIII, well well well

I've been a bit on and off with this S2 ever since I took ownership of it. I've never really felt any attachment to it like I have with most of the other cars I've have........until today.

A young lad at work has just got an Evo VIII and within 48 hours it had a de-cat and down pipe then a ECUTEK remap to take it to about 330ish bhp.

My S2 is totally standard as far as power goes, the suspension has been fettled and the bushes have all been done so it is quite tight but that's it, no power mods at all.

Well, we arranged to see the comparison between 230 and 330 BHP up the 'private runway' we have use of at Racelogic.
We sat level during the start then supposedly on the count of 3 (fingers) we would go. He went on 1 so I was already at a disadvantage.
He obviously was now a length or two ahead of me within a few seconds but then that was it, nothing else, I was never any further away than that the whole length of the two lane runway...obviously, did he back off? was there excessive traffic? (planes and things).

We rounded the end of the runway and came down the other side, again being behind I was not aware of the starting point so I had to just watch. Again he got ahead slightly then nothing, he got no further and I stuck to him right up to fifth where we were both obviously approaching silly speeds.
So does he have a duffer? I don't think so.
Is my S2 super powerful? Nope, it's not as quick as my old modded B5 S4.

To confirm his side I called when I got home...."Hello, were you giving your 'full death mode'"? It's just that you didn't seem to get very far away from me......both sides.
He said "Yeah there was a bit of traffic (planes and things)up the first side but down the other side it was full throttle"

So now I have a little more respect for the old 5 pot growler and it may stay a little longer than planned.....maybe, and my friend from work is planning yet more mods to shake off the 16 year old purple estate car which is 'apparently' for grandads!.

The old 5 pots modded can be seriously quick.

At the moment I haven't really found anything on the road that can take me on to within legal limits. And at the track only the out and out racecars have got the upper hand. The old quattro's handle well and the power delivery is spot on in them. So congrats on showing another Jap boy that it's all about German engineering

But it's totally standard power-wise, which is why I thought it was odd. With a simple re-map I'd be all over him I think, how embarrasing.....for him that is.

            Excellent!

I also ran against an evo 8 modded (290awhp) vs my aby coupe with a gt3071 and saw him through my rear view mirror

On one of the days my S6 was running well (distant memory) i had a similar thing with a supposed 360hp S3, only JUST managed to pull away.

I think maybe(?) its the 5 pot cars longer gearing and usable torque curve.

It's a torque thing... Plenty more where that came from with a bit of binary tweaking.

I have also raced a evo 8, (FQ360 i think it was.) He has giving it full beans judging by the amount of black smoke coming out of the exhaust and i was pushing him on!! Oh and my car is an ABY coupe MTM chipped, decatted, k+N panel filter, big brakes but that made no difference this time I was very supprised but happy

I have just followed a Porsche 997 Carrera 4s back from Reading to Oxford, He was giving it the full beans over taking and I was tucked up behind gearchange for gearchange! Bloody hilarious. 14 yr old £6k car plays £70 worth of Stugarts finest!

I never cease to be amazed by the torque and grunt in second, third and fourth!

Must admit these cars do still make me smile, been a while since I've been out for a drive in a s2, went out tonight in a rs2 spec coupe and to say it made me smile is an understatement, you didn't need to touch the accelerator for enough power to push the car ahead quicker than anything else on the road tonight. Next step me thinks is to upgrade the stock brakes which amazingly was still up to stopping the car

I know its an S2 Forum but

I think there is something wrong with his EVO

100hp difference come on lads it should of wiped the floor with a STD s2

I raced a Chipped TT with my 20V converted UR and the TT was quite a bit quicker

I've been in a couple of EVO's the quickest being a 400 ish HP one

I have a bridge test near me from a set of traffic lights (But not traffic lights because its a private road) to under a bridge results as follows

UR with 10V but tweaked (quicker than std 20V engine) 118 MPH
                        Kawasaki ZX9R 140 MPH
As above EVO 135 MPH with two fattys in it and a 12 stone driver

Probably the quickest car I've ever been in
                        URQ 20vt converted
80 quattro saloon with on going a V8 transplant

That's what I was thinking, 100 bhp is quite a margin but I know for certain that his EVO has been mapped properly so it's really puzzling.
I might get him to do it again so we are sure there wasn't anything holding him back at all.

Put them both on same dyno as well. Would be interesting to see. The evo might be running low and/or the S2 might have been chipped in a past life.

Working at Racelogic we have access to many data logging devices so we may use those to find out the facts about each cars power output but the S2 is definitely standard, Doug at MRC has confirmed that for me already.
