rs4
The headache in the 2.7t is where the turbo is located. Were as the aan 2.2t is right there. No need to pull the whole motor.
Dont get me wrong i love the 2.7t rs4, personally it rocks. But i rather the 2.2t urs4/s6, s2, rs2.
At the end of the day is a personal preferance!

RS2! It's what I did... albeit on a much lower budget. Has the brakes, interior and looks with enough power - unless you want in excess of 400hp - and it's a rare icon that isn't going to hurt with depreciation. Spend £10k tuning an S2 and you won't see it back.
That said... if you want to mod the hell out of it, go with the S2 and dump the money in. No point doing crazy mods to an RS2 IMO. And if you're not planning on selling it, who cares about depreciation!AUDI - saving Dad's from minivans since 1994

If I'm right Ross has had an S2 coupe, at least one S2 avant and now the RS2 so the above makes complete sense. It's more about what you want out of the car. Silver RS2 would also be my choice I think if I was looking for an RS.RS2! It's what I did... albeit on a much lower budget. The other consideration would be when do you intend to drive the car. Is it needed on the road every day or can you afford off the road time whilst carrying out mods.ShaneComment

Thank you all.
RS2 seems to gather most votes
S4/RS4 are nice but I don't see myself touching such a complicated engine, besides they are no I5
So no one would go for an 80 modded to hell...I though someone would pick up my insane proposition, but...
It all depends on the market and cars available but so far I am leaning towards the Rs2, possibly silver hehe

Just for the record, quattronutter on here who is very experienced with S2 and S4 engines says the S4 one is easier to work on the S2 in most cases.
Yes you have to remove the engine to changes turbos, but so what? Its not exactly something you do every week is it!
Buy a good one and you should never have to.
Its certainly not something I ever worry about having to do, and I drive mine every day.
As for it sounding like an I5, well of course not, but if you heard mine Id garantee you think its just as good
Anyone going to the MRC day is more than welcome to find out

Deffo RS2.
RS2's at least in europe are starting to go up in price while RS4's are still depreciating a bit.
The thing is, if you take good care of it, you might be able to sell the RS2 for more or the same money than you bought it for one day - even with the higher mileage.Comment

Why?
~500whp.RS4 is a little over the budget. How far can the B5 internals go as far as power goes?
Most S4's cost nothing, because they need at least 5k to get running properly.
Replacing turbos or manifolds is an engine out job, many of these cars have cracked manifolds, their turbos blowing etc and they are a nightmare to work on.
You have to pull the engine for almost anything...
Also, financially the RS2 is a much better buy.
When it comes to upgading power, it's cheaper to make power on the RS2 than on the S4, however the S4's driveability is better due to larger displacement and less lag.
In case of the RS2, if you want to go for more power, you'll need stronger rods. But chances are, the engine needs refreshing anyway, and you might as well do it then.
Same goes for the S4 - it might be eating oil as well.
The S4 is a more modern car, it has a lighter chassis with more sophisticated suspension and thus better handling. However, when you have two turbos, two intercoolers, two exhaust manifolds, two intake manifolds, basically two everything and every job requires the engine to be out, things do get two times more expensive.
Not to mention the depreciation when you decide to sell it.
So - if money is not an object, S4 each and every time, it's a newer and better car. However, if you have to be remotely concious about your spending, the RS2 wipes the floor in that department. Mainly due to the high re-sale value and being simpler.Comment
Or go out and get a RS6 for 14k
