Hi guys,
I have been using (abusing ?) the forum for years but have only now joined... better late than ever. What a fab site and a goldmine of information that helps keep cars like mine on the road..
Started my audi ownership with a nice Audi 90 Quattro Sport 20V, great car and had it for 8 years. It was the reason I wanted to get an RS2. Great build quality, character and reliability, just a bit under powered for me...
Realising I needed a practical car but also something a bit different, my choices were limited. Because I also (at that time) had a 1978 911 Turbo tucked up in the garage, whatever I chose would need to earn its keep. I quickly decided BMW's were boring and common as mud, I am too young for a volvo, saab or merc, what else would do except another audi... RS2
I checked out a few. After seeing and driving 3 or 4 I knew it was the car for me, and it had to be Nogaro Blue. In the end I located a car from a private seller which was the right price, the right colour and drove well. Thinking mysely reasonably experienced with audis I checked it out, it was not perfect and at 8 years old and 140,000 miles, was a bit of a risk. I NEARLY went ahead and bought it but at the last minuite I spent a further £150 for an AA inspection which gave it a clean bill of health... Great, so I bought the car. I was over the moon.
After a few weeks I started to find faults that I would have expected the AA inspection to have picked up. To cut a long story short, I had the car inspected by an audi specialist and was provided with a long list of faults and a bill for £3,500 to put it right....
All of these should have been picked up by the AA inspection. Following a complaint and re-inspection by the AA, the AA accepted their mistake and responsibility.. First offer was to purchase the car from me for the price I had paid, naturally I rejected this. Next option was for me to have the work done and pass the bill to them for payment, fair enough and true to their word, that is what they did.
The last minuite decision to spend £150 for the AA inspection was the best investment I ever made. In the end I had a car that was well sorted out and a bargain.
Today the car has 196,000 miles on the clock. I use it every day, Guildford to Farnborough. At a recent rolling road check it produced a consistent 335 bhp, cant be a bad sign... While overseas I had the car stored for 3 years at a porsche dealer along with the 930, both cars did not need significant work to get them back on the road just a service and fluid change and off the went...
I look after it, when it needs work, it gets done properly. Whenever something comes up I take any opportunity to upgrade or modernise it for the long term. Example is the dreaded calliper corrosion, I had to do this shortly after buying the car (infact AA paid for a new rear calliper and refurb of the front callipers), but only 3 years later, it needed to be done again. This time, with a lot of research on this site and others, I selected GT3 monoblock callipers and porsche 965 front discs for the front which means that not only did I improve the brakes enormously but also cured one of the achilies heels of the car, and I can avoid audi prices for brake parts as I can now shope at porsche specialists.... I did the same for the rear brakes too. Same with the dampers, they needed changing so I upgraded to knoi adjustables F&R.
The last major job was the koni suspension upgrade and at the same time replace all the bushes in the suspension. What a transformation, smooth and tight just like a new car.
Other little tweaks are HID headlights, a6 aero wipers, touran rear aero wipers, K&N air filter and auto dimming rear view mirror.
Now I am a member of the forum I look forward to sharing some of my experiences and information I have collected over allmost 15 years with audi cars..
