Dude, you dont have to do the welding thing if you got engine that's not a V6 from the factory. 2.0, 2.3 10V, 2.3 20V, 2.2 20vt has the same mounts. The only difference between the engine mounts are for V6 engine 2.6 and 2.8.
If you got any other engine besides V6 go for it! Just put the diesel in it, get the wiring done and enjoy riding with 40 MPG in urban mode and 56 MPG on the track.

Very good job, I congratulate you on the project, and thought I would ever do the same with my 2.3, in terms of Mencanica and electronics would not have that problem quite understand.

The question I have is more administrative than anything, what kind of papers or paperwork you have to do to pass the car inspection in your country, or ally you can do "whatever you want"?

For that here in Spain as there are administrative barriers for all, I see such a project unfeasible.

Cool thanks for the info, definateley makes me more interested, as i have no idea about welding

So is there a particular TDI engine that would be best for the job? I mean would it need to be from an 80 1.9TDI, or could I use one from another VAG group car?(like seat for example). If i did do this i would ideally like to end up with about 150ish bhp after some mild(ie cheapish) fettling.

        Cheer
"So long, and thanks for all the fish!"

Well you can pick any other VAG group engines. For example my engine is from Audi B5 A4 TDI, not from a audi 80 TDI. You'll have to find the right alloy engine mounts to fit it in though. Not really a big deal but still.

          anyway - had a crash:
car now is ready to be turned into nails:

not the newest picture, but still.
At the moment the car has almoustnothing on. Removed allmost everything and sold as car parts.
Working on new project. The same engine, but different body. This time:
          audi 80 Q avant.
          RS2 replica wannabe.
