  • My 1994 RS2 Guards Red Porsche prototype (& huge thx to Steve Brown - steverrquattro)

hi all, well I've finally got the car back after 3 and a half months of it being off the road waiting for parts and installs. It had been off the road longer then on it as far as my length of ownership went!

Long story short is that it's back on the road but what a journey!

Short story long is that I had to source a replacement gearbox and the best place to do it was from your end (the UK). There are only about 11 RS2's in NZ (http://www.vask.org.nz/index.php/topic,11103.0.html) so the spare parts bin is a little empty...

As luck would have it I found the brand new RS2 box Steve was selling thread and thought all my xmas's had come at once. Unfort I got to the end of the thread and it had sold a few weeks before I needed it (and it had been on there for years! Arrggggh!!)

I contacted Steve and asked him if there was a chance if the new owner would sell it on. Steve asked and the answer was a firm no.

But Steve did say he knew of another 2nd hand box. So the long journey began. The amount of leg \ phone \ email work Steve has done on my behalf is phenomenal! He sourced the box, chased up, chased up again, got it to a gearbox specialist, chased up again, chased up again, checked and then air freighted (at cost) to New Zealand!

STEVE HAS BEEN AMAZING! AND I OWE HIM BIG TIME!

Unfortunately when the box turned up at this end and was fitted it had problems. Audi Wellington pulled it apart and found it had been reassembled incorrectly by the UK guys who pulled apart, checked and put it back together giving the all clear. (in their words the bolt holding 5th in place had come loose and caused movement \ issues). They examined and nothing major had worn (within specs they said) and its all back together.

1 gearbox removal , rebuild and install more than I had wanted but happy to have it back on the road.

Steve is now chasing the UK gearbox guys for answers and maybe some $$ - AMAZING HE'S STILL GOING!

So basically, my cars back on the road thanks to Steve and I'm so grateful! And he's still doing things on my behalf!

Thanks so much Steve and I can't thank you enough! Thank you , thank you, thank you!!!

Car is due back in on Monday to get brakes skimmed but hopefully after that I can just concentrate on driving (and enjoying) the damned thing!

    - Gearbox in and it's nice to have 1st back and hopefully a long future with this box!
    - AC working is awesome (condenser)
    - new gear knob is nice and flash
    - new badges are shiny
    - new accelerator pedal is awesome
    - haven't noticed any increase in power from the diaphragm replacement but it has been 3 odd months! (Audi said it's all better now)

It looks really good in Guards Red, wierd it wasnt the red that made it into the production run. Also some interesting features on your car, it has side repeater indicators which I'm told are UK only and the small oval Audi badges on the front wings. I've never seen those badges fitted before. Great car!

well after a couple of days behind the wheels I fear things aren't quite right with the box

So I've sent an email to the Audi Wellington guys

Be keen to hear what the forum has to say about this box or what I could be experiencing.

As I drove it home tonight it wasn't that bad but definitely as smooth as the first box (minus the 1st gear problem) - I can almost feel something clunking or biting as I'm going through the gears.

Can I compare to my RS4 ? Does it have the same 6 speed box? Or is it apples and oranges?

              Thanks all!

              Morning all

Long story short, I've had the car for a few days and I'm not happy.

Short story long, the 2nd gear issue is causing me a lot of problems and concern. Basically its very tough to get it into that gear (1st > 2nd , 3rd > 2nd), sometimes I really need to give it a bit of force as it clunks uncomfortably into place.

The original box (which the gearbox specialists said had a raft of problems) was no where near this difficult. The report back only outlined 1st and 6th actual gear issues. Too be honest I didn't notice any issue any gears other than the 1st gear syncro. (Shifting between gears and them engaged were all fine and smooth)

When Wayne from Audi called last week (I'm still not sure what department he works in) he said that he was %100 confident that

              - Audi Wellington had the skills to pull apart and put together these gearboxes
              - That you would make the best box out of the 2 you had
              - Identify any issues \ concerns and let me know of the costs \ parts to rectify and get the box %100

With this info in hand I was happy to proceed and pay the 3500 bill for this round of work.

As the box was completely apart I was expecting a call to authorise the purchasing of parts (synchros \ bearings \ etc)

As I didn't receive any calls I assumed the parts you had available were %100.

I am bringing the car back on Monday to have the discs skimmed (Michael has organised) so I would appreciate it if you can please take a look and work on a course of action to rectify the situation.

              NB:

              - Some of the other gears are a little notchy but 2nd stands out as the largest concern
              - Even putting it into 1st from a stand still (neutral) I sometimes need to push the clutch pedal down , release and put it in again to get it in smoothly
              - You guys have installed a new clutch so I'm not sure if that needs to be factored in

              Kind regards

              John
