  • 2.8CQ Back on the road at last!

    Hello
I am very pleased to say my car is back on the road today!
Specialised Engines in Grays did the hard bit of swapping the gearbox, and in fairness done a good job of it. It didn't need much for the MOT, a few bulbs, wiper blade and headlight. not bad for 5 years of sitting there! luckily my dad's Coupe can be a bit of a donor car for bits and bobs.
First drive today and very happy!
the exhaust is a problem though with the amount of speed humps, I have ended up with a great big underslung silencer so ground clearance is awful, not helped as it has gone on a bit wonky as well (accidently).
Would like to thank the forum for the years of quiet support and of course My Girlfriend and family members who have also helped with my finances. Special mention to Spink who sorted me out a good 2nd hand gearbox. Thanks mate!

lots of little jobs to do now, the paint has suffered in places, wing gone through, headlining dropping, but fingers crossed mechanicals ok. just had all oils and coolant changed, before the gearbox went it had new tyres, timing belt service, bushes/mounts/exhaust/brake lines, steering rack, stereo

have had pipecraft in Basildon recommended to me for exhaust mods, hopefully we can get it up a bit.

Thanks, and looking forward to ADI, my name is on the list!

      Excellent stuff Phil
Really nice to see someone else persevering with a 2.8 CQ with so much temptation to swop out the engine and drop a 5 cylinder in !
Will yours be on the club stand ?
(Tempted to bring mine now as it will be fixed next week)
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

        i have a soft spot for these 2.8 CQ`s!!!

a mate had a kingfisher one with decat stainless system, big cone filter and a remap/chip and it went like ****!

full black leather and 18" 6 spoke wheels also, oh and full history! (anyone buy this from Newcastle about 4 yrs ago?)

          Thanks Guys
yes will be at ADI, and may go on track as well.
am back from band practice, a nice run down the A13 from Benfleet. had a dabble with the cruise control on the way back, pumped up the tyres, will try fully loaded pressure of 36/40psi might give me a few mm of clearance as well I hope. Average mpg is over 31 so far. will try and run on Tesco 99 for a while and let the ECU settle a bit. Also would like to get it on the rollers at AMD, just to see how much difference my exhaust and 99 petrol makes. I did get it tested at surrey rolling road back in 07' on standard unleaded.
I had a chat with pipecraft on the phone, will get over there as soon as I can to see what's achievable.
It is driving really nice, no more knocks now that droplinks are changed. exhaust doesn't sound too loud, certainly no worse than the noise in my horrible van. I might try a bit of extra insulation in the boot under the carpet. stereo sounds great.
What I like about this engine the most is that you barely have to touch the throttle for normal driving and when you do, it just picks up. (with the noise... 'grrrrr-up' ~)

          Cheers, all the best
          Phil
