    When did the S2 switch from 3B to ABY?

    Owner of an alleged 1993 Audi Coupe S2 (Registered in NZ 16/09/93) but i'm a little confused. It's a 5 speed 3B engined vehicle and I thought that by '93 the S2's were all ABY...Maybe it's a 'late' model 3B?
    VIN No: WAAUZZZ8BZPA000565.
    Maybe the boat just took ages to land it here. If you're an S2 historian i'd be interested to hear your viewpoint.
    Doesn't matter either way. Now owned for just over a month. Really like it.

    Around that time there were also cross over vehicles, I had a coupe with aby engine and 3b pipes going from inter cooler to throttle body and other little bits too. Mine wasn't the only one either

          You might have a bit of mongrel. Audi sometimes did some weird stuff with VINs and content. For example, Canada got NO 1992 model year (MY) UrS4s. However, we got "1993" UrS4s that were built from January 1992 to June 1992 with full 92 MY specs but with "PN" VINs, i.e. P = 1993 MY (N = Neckarsulm plant).

          I assume that you have a typo in your VIN, i.e. should be WAU, not WAAU.

          ZZZ = Not for North America

          8B = the B3 coupe. (On the Build tag there should be either 8B3025 (= S2 coupe 3B with 5 spd) or 8B3039 (S2 coupe ABY with 6 spd)

          Z = check sum used on the VIN to validate the VIN

          P = 1993 Model year (in theory)

          A = Ingolstadt plant

          000565 = sequential build number, Aug 1992 ended with 8B-PN-001185 so your's should be an August 1992 build.

          The last 3B engine should be 013199 which was built in July 1992. Engine number is stamped into the head, exhaust side, front, under cam cover vent.

          The last 3B S2 should have been 09/92 and the first ABY S2 coupe should have been 10/92 (these are late MY change overs usually they are in July or August)

          If you can find your build sticker in the boot (spare tyre well) or the warranty book, post it up and we can figure things out better.

          Will look like this (only different):

          RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan
          94 UrS4 V8 6 spd manual avant

                PM me your email address. I will do a complete build tag breakdown for you. If you email me a photo of the car and then engine number, the resulting document is very handy for future use.

                In the meantime, it is an 8B3025 = S2 coupe with 3B and 5 spd, i.e. as a 1993 model year car but before the switch to the ABY/6 spd.

                    Got it and replied via email.

                    A photo showing the side of the car and the front, i.e. the "3/4" shot is good, also one showing the rear and the side is helpful.

                      Your S2 is a bit interesting. A bit of a stripper, maybe ordered by a tall person (no sunroof and special seating brackets) See below:

                      PA 000565 was built at the Ingolstadt plant in mid-August 1992 as a 1993 Model Year S2

                      8B3 025 = S2 coupe with 3B and 5 spd

                      3B = the 220 DIN hp 20V turbo engine. 012902 was built in early July 1992 (so it was in inventory prior to the build of PN 000565)
                      AYV = the rear diff (locking) (PN 017500043M)
                      ARV = an 01A 5 spd (PN 01A300042RX)

                      LY3H = Laser Red paint
                      N0D/TW = Platinum grey cloth, presumbably with the "quattro" script

                      Now the detailed build tag codes:

                      X7X Control Of Global Product Program (not for the UK, etc.)

                      C4G Wheel Disc Aluminum 7J x 16H2 ET 37 (presumably the 5 spoke Ronal, 5/112 as discussed HERE)
                      G0G Five-Speed Manual Transmission For Four-Wheel Drive Vehicle
                      H4N Tires 215/40 Zr 17 (should be H4G = Tires 205/55 R 16 V )
                      J0J Battery 300 A (63 Ah)
                      M3F 5-Cyl. Gasoline Engine 2.2 L/162 Kw 20V Closed-Loop Catalytic Converter Base Engine is T4W
                      Q1K Sports Seats With Modified Seat Runner And Seat Adjustment (I haven't seen that one before)

                        Looks like one of the last 3B coupes there. It never ceases to amaze me when new members pop up with these cars on the other side of the world. Brilliant.
