RS2 rear brakes not getting full contact

So I've not had her long but I think that there may be a problem starting with the rear brakes on the RS2. After I give her a wash I usually take her for a short spin on dry roads and not at high speed, to dry off the disks and pads. However I'm now seeing that the outer edge of the disks are not being used and I'm getting concerned that there may be a sticky issue with the calipers!! The've been off recently at Audi to have the handbrake shoes replaced, (I dont have a ramp easily accessable and not high enough on jack to get proper purchase on the retaining bolts at rear of caliper), now this has started to show, is there anything that could be causing this??

Just Jack it up you won't need a ramp. Has it had new pads and they are just bedding in maybe?

Yeah the RS2 has seperate handbrake shoes inside the hubs, but these are prone to not working properly I'm told, but the new ones are holding much better now even on a good slope. The old ones were quite efficient too, but was not impressed when I seen that one of the liners had disentigrated indside, luckliy they did not sieze up on the move.

The rear pads are not new, the have bags of meat on them too, and my thoughts are that the weather we have in UK is more damp than Belgium where she lived for over years and she doesnt like this climate too much, and when she's not being used she's in dry storage and well covered up. I'm not really a fan of jacking cars up, prefer to get them onto a 2 poster and work under them. But apparently when she was into Audi they had all the calipers off to give them a "clean and lube" if required, but they still bind onto the disks. I'm not a mechanic by any measure but I know that they should be free and only a little contact on the disks when you turn the wheel!

If the pads or calliper are corroded the pads can stick and they tip in rather than move in parallel, you get uneven wear, sometimes you can just strip, remove corrosion and sort it.

Obviously much nicer on a lift, but can easily be done on axle stands with a trolley jack and some tools.

Pads are probably tapered. I bet your pedal is quite spongy too. I have this issue with my rear brakes. Once the disc gets like that it doesn't recover on its own. Strip down, replace pads, get discs skimmed / replace & also inspect / rebuild calipers to find the cause of the problem

Do you thinkn that with a wee hammer, a busted ratchet and a paving chisel will do the job then Andy?

I will see what my mates think about bringing into their workshop once weekend and give it a good go, at least I will be able to use my newly purchased breaker bar!! I had the car into Audi as mentioned, but when I parked her up and rolled her a little to listen to the noise from the breaks I think they never even took the calipers off as requested and I paid for it, so I will notice if the nuts have been loosened recently, if not I will be straight onto the phone and get them to come to me and see for themselves, but patience young padewan must look first....must get home too, more important....

Yeah thats what I'm expecting too. They were fine when I got the car, but having driven her on not so nice days (to get the kat fitted) several times I think she's not taking a shine to Scottish weather and roads....

Me too, I heard of this when looking at buying one, but thought that being Audi should be ok....maybe not as I hear they are not all that great for holding in hills....

It is hard to find somebody who will spend as much time/care as an owner can to service brakes etc. Main dealer is no guarantee of good work, I have seen cars with new pads jammed into corroded calliper carriers, yes they fitted new pads, but they did not ensure they moved freely.

This will give you an idea of the possible cause. The RS2 used similiar if not identical (other than the colour) components:

Perfect, now gotta figure out how that clip comes off as I did not need to do this to get at the hand brake shoes, they look under some tension too, so will be a nice little job for a Sunday me thinks.

Thanks for the info. I think I seen something about calipers a while back to strip, clean properly and use that grease, and by the sound of it too it worked well.
