Agreed Dave, now that you say it and I re-read it is familiar, but I'd forgotten. We're all getting older, and not necessarily any wiser in my case.

I suppose the best arrangement is to have one of each. An I5t and a V8.

I think if the daily was a supercharged V8 C4, it would be used more than the I5t.

Nice dilemma for you to have Dave.

People might call me stupid, but I liked driving my V6 much more than the I5t, simply because power was there straight away. Most likely if it was a quattro, i wouldn't have swapped it to S4. Every now and then I think about getting a V8 C4 100, simply because power is there straight away.

And there are far more less issues with a N/A engine

No i wouldn't call you stupid at all Janis.I take it you read my comment a couple posts earlier about the virtues of the V6 engine. The reason why there is so much justified hype about the I5 is simply because of it's pedigree in rallying that it is very tunable and it does make a nice sound .I am going the Volvo turbo route eventually as i hate lag so problem sorted for me.

As with lots of other cars over the decades that seemingly have been overlooked by spotted oiks, beer goggled and trump card playing brigade in favor of higher bhp Numbers the V6's time will come of age but by that time they will be so rare because wrongly people have overlooked them. A FWD 2.8 30V along with the 2.6 are very nice power plants that can be tweaked to embarrass a standard S4/S6. Iolair up in Scotland pissed all over UR quattros on a road trip in his slightly tweaked FWD 2.6 saloon. Was it the car or his Police trained pursuit driving skills. He swears it was the car.

Manual cars indeed, they use flexible main shaft and oil pump connected to the cooler. Automatics however are completely different cars.

            go for it

I did replaced my I5 (it was AEL ) with ABZ

since it's newer version V8 than ones used in c4 chasis I had some issues with oil cooler/filter I had to remove and right hand engine bracket
watch for flywheel !! hard to find since V8 engines from that era were mostly with auto transmissions
other than that it's straight forward
you'll need V6 radiator, c4 V8 fan cowl and exhaust manifold
in my case, air filter and intake pipe used from A8, just needed custom brackets

ofcourse, I kept my AEL gerbox and replaced rear diff with one from V8 (D11)

            what else??
ah yes, you'll need V8 c4 tie rods
clutch set for V8 manual gearbox
front motor console can be reused from A8 (not sure what's exact expression)
in my case I had to cut off a part of the oil sump (ABZ has that lower part deaper)
            rewireing
            heat shealds for exhaust manifolds

and a loads of good will

One way to deal with the V8 into C4 chassis issue is to use the ABH short block and the later A8 ABZ heads and intake manifold. The C4 V8 engine mounts work without issue because the ABH did get into some C4s. Going to the later heads eliminates the two distributors of the ABH but does require the correct newer ECU and/or VEMS.

Do the later heads bolt straight on? no mods bar the controlling ecu?

You need a donor ABZ to get bits off of it, including the engine harness and the ECU. The project that I am thinking of happened to use VEMS. I couldn't find the project thread so I will email the owner and quiz him. I will report back.

I sent an email to the fellow who did this project, Doug W. (islingtonaudi):

"Doug: Someone started a thread on the S2Forum that directly called me out as a UrS4 AAN *and* UrS4 V8 avant owner. In the middle of the thread, somebody started talking about V8 conversions. I gave an oblique reference to your thread and now there are more questions. I tried to find your build thread at EFI Express, Motorgeek and the Project Pad, but failed. Can you point me to your project thread? The most recent question was whether or not you could use the ABZ ECU with the ABH block and the ABZ heads. I said I would quiz you."

                    Doug's replies:

                    1. "I think it is possible to use the ABZ ecu but tweaking is necessary. Not plug and play, immobilizer won't allow it."

                    2. "Dave, here's the link to my build:

I don't think an A8 ECU would work so well out of the box without some re-coding. I hear it can be done, Stuklr from the Allroad forum and formerly the S4 forum says he could have re-coded my A8 ECU to work but VEMS is pretty ideal for getting max power. Another option is an S6 Plus ECU but the compression and other stuff is pretty unique to that engine so not sure. Hope it helps. /Doug"

Visit the thread linked above. Doug has some mad skilz related to attention to detail and perseverance and patience.

No problem. I was able to procrastinate on painting 1942 era fir baseboards and door trim by doing that.

Plus I wanted to review what he did as well. I would rather eliminate the distributors on my ABH but that looks like a lot of work (to replace the ABH heads with ABZ heads, et al.)

I was following Doug's built while I was doing mine ... not sure on what forum but it helped me a lot ... thanx Doug (if you see this)

one remark on heads swap ... I'll suggest to trace AKH/AHC engine and use heads and ECU
some ECUs can be recoded to manual transmission using vag-cat
and this way you'll get a S6+ engine setup

regarding immo - if you find a donor car you can always take out immo box and key capsule(chip) and use for your built ... this way you'll keep immo function
