My North American Pseudo S2 :)

Hi there, been lurking daily into this forum for a little while now. I had a 1990 CQ which I intended to swap with an AAN engine (a lot more easy to find over here).

Though a couple weeks ago, a CQ with a 3B engine came for sale!! (for the ones who don't know - we don't have S2's here and the only car that had the 3b engine were the 1991 200 20vt - and they sold more or less a 1000 of those and only in the U.S. - not in Canada. On top of that, there were maybe 1400 CQ sold in North America altogether ... so it's almost like finding a saloon

I pondered the idea for 2 weeks and figured I would find the money to buy it.

So, here I am with my "Pseudo-S2"

Supposedly it is bone stock aside from a German engineered cheap ebay chip, 3" exhaust (though the muffler is 2.5" I think) and front mounted bigger intercooler.

It belonged to a Hungarian guy who seem to know his part on those Audi

The plus is that the body is really solid and shows almost no rust.

I had loads of parts coming with it : 2 x complete 7a engines (good for heads and cams ) - front and rear subframes - many bits and parts hard to find over here - has a used but nice Nardi steering

    Also, was repainted lately.

There is a TON of little things here and there that'll need to look into (locks don't work, backup light switch, windshield, handbrake, hood cable snapped, interior, etc... etc...)

The wiring was supposedly done by someone ho knows what they are doing - though there is a nest of wire just above the clutch pedal !! I surely hope I won't end up needing to mess around in there.

The interior is also rough, though is grey leather (I'll probably try to retro fit UrS4's in at some point anyways

I am a newb at turbo cars but not at mechanics - been finding a lot of posts, articles on the subject and there seem to be alot more than on the 7a CQ engine.

    1 have 1 MAJOR question :

I have a boost gauge fitted in the vents above the radio - what should it read at full boost ??

Should I deduct atmospheric pressure !?!?

Because it starts in the negative (i.e. -15psi or so) and goes well above +20psi !! It goes to a point where I can't see the needle anymore.

I haven't checked things yet - I will investigate but I haven't wanted to push too hard because of that. Not sure if normal or not. Maybe the chip removed the safe guards concerning oversboost ??

Also, one other issue that is intriguing : The engine speed dial shows 4k RPM at 110km/h!!

I'm not sure it's acutally going that speed (rpm). I thought I had read something on here about using the DualMass from the 3b (Audi 200) on the 7a transmision.

Are the ratio's that shorter ?? Or it's just the engine speed sensor that is off due to a difference in the flywheel teeths or position of the sensor ?

Anyways - this is just a 1st post - I'll have loads to come in the future

If someone can clarify the boost question I'd appreciate it - I'll probably post a little video of it later on.

    Cheers

    Etienne

    Congratulations on your purchase
Re: boost, the max on the stock k24 is around 1.4bar reliably, so around 20psi. Be careful of "eBay" chips they sometimes defeat the stock knock control and other safety features (unnecessarily). There are known safe chipsets available, so I'd recommend investigating what you have to make sure it is good.
You also should get hold of a stock airbox and bin the cone filter. Stock flows very well
Wiring was a mess from the factory, but you might have more of a mess than Audi left you

Congrats. Where in Canada are you? I might be able to connect you to other 20V turbo Inline-5 folks in your area (group therapy/support).

Not sure what transmission you are running and therefore what final drive ratio is involved. 4000 RPM at 110 kph is too high. More like 3000 is correct (for stock S2 with the correct sized tires, etc).

Engine speed is read by the G28 engine speed sensor which effectively counts the teeth of the flywheel ring gear (132 teeth per revolution).

That "cold air" cone filter air intake is actually sucking hot air from then engine bay, killing some of your potential performance. Try sourcing the proper S2 airbox and feed tubes etc.

Check your private mail here for links to loads of 20V turbo info that will come in handy at some point.

Perhaps the instrument cluster is wrong. Would help to identify potential problems if we knew if the rpm or speed was displayed wrong

The transmission is 7a - though 3B flywheel.
I think the cluster is CQ (sure looks exactly the same) - I did nothice from previous repairs on my CQ that there were little "sliders" to change the spec of the odometer based on what model it was used for (I think is for diesel or something - maybe I'll check that when I add the check engine bulb - My bet is that the G28 doesn't send the appropriate signal. Same amount of tooth from 7a flywheel to 3B ?

Yeah I know about that cone - like I said LOTS of little thinkgs to do I will also need a heat shield for the intake tube ... and in a near future I'll fabricate a modified AAN intake to fit the short chassis and pass the intake on the other side

I'm from Ottawa region. Already met with Wizard-of-OD who has a RHD genuine S2 ! Good contact to have -very, very knoledgable !! Also another UrS4/S6 enthousiast (from which I have already bought an AAN engine).

Any thoughts on that boost gauge ? Like I said - newb question - do I deduct the atmospheric pressure from it or no ?

          Thanks for good comments !!

Boost gauge will be relative I.e. Zero will be atmospheric pressure. Negative is vacuum, positive is boost. If it goes much over 20psi I'd be wary until you know what software and fuelling you have. The ECU uses the RPM signal, also the crank senders are very reliable. I'd guess your instrument cluster is the source of the problem

Audi 80/90/Coupe Q instrument cluster diagnostics

7A's had 01A transmissions with 37/9 crown/pinion and AEC lockable rear diffs with 37/9 crown/pinions. So that is not the issue.

The 3B flywheel has been used on numerous AANs without any speedometer issues so that is not the issue.

              That leaves two possibilities:

              1. Your tires are smaller than stock.

              2. Something is wrong with your instrument cluster. Either something is set wrong or there is an issue with the tachometer. The G28 engine speed sender rarely fails.

              This might help:

Congratulations! I helped to build this car... it has an AAN flywheel with a brand new clutch to help mate it to the 01A.
The tachometer is reading high for sure. I've been in that car couple of times.
There is no insulation on the firewall so at speed the loudness of the engine makes it seam as if its true.
