For an engine block that’s usable once you rebore and hone, infact old wreathed blocks are far stronger than new ones as they have had tons of heat cycling and all the stresses from manufacturing have been relieved. In the days of turbo F1 cars BMW used to buy up old high mileage blocks, leave them sitting outside in the rain, and then machine them and build 1500cc F1 screamers producing around 1500hp. There argument was if they survived 100,000 miles in a road car getting constant heat cycling there were unstressed and less likely to fail.91CQ20v - Gone to a new home

I also heard the BMW engineers took turns taking a leak on them for good measure

The fabled BMW turbo F1 engine - yes, apparently, they really did take turns to pee on the things! Supposedly to increase the amount of corrosion. In the US, automotive parts suppliers that specialised in engines would often advertise "seasoned" engine blocks. The theory as I understand it, is that the molecular/granular structure will be more dense.

Wow, I'll have to drag out the 2 ancient VW engines that have been 'seasoning' in my garage for the last 6 years - the 1300 polo engine would make an ideal 15000rpm screamer, and the 1800 scirocco engine would be an ideal basis for a turboed torque monster...
ebay here I come!Nothing feels fast for long...
