Dont get me wrong i love the Audi but i know if i came up against a healthy E36 M3 Evo with a vanos system thats working (and thats half the reason why many are sick performance wise) then i know in my head i wouldnt stand a chance - 320bhp versus 280bhp in a lighter car doesnt add up - torque can only do so much and thats not taking into account the greater rolling losses the Audi has from the 4wd

I agree with everything you've just stated (in logical terms), however, I've had 2 goes with separate "current" M3's 343bhp with my homefried S2 avant between 50-130mph (on a drag strip of course ) which is also the "real world" and on both occasions, neither M3 could pull 1 inch ahead of me (first occasion I was totaly miffed too). Now I'm not sure if I'm correct, but isn't the current M3 heavier than the S2? The current one is not any slower in real terms than the previous 320bhp Evo either is it? (it may be lighter)

I know I'm not the only homefried to keep with the M3, but the 340bhp?? M5 should be even heavier than the M3, therefore I would like to think I would be right up there with that particular model M5:mischeifsorry, I'm not up with Beemer E4567 model etc etc)

Are you sure your S2 is actually running correctly on all fronts??

    The debate/confusion continues

Which M5? They're all beastly but I love the 3.8 E34s! The E39 5.0 V8 must be completely mental too!

I've been in a few M3s and my Mum owned a 3.0 for a bit. They're bloomin fast, handle wonderfully and the noise...

Personally, I prefer the Audi for everday driving on wet, muddy, oily roads. Quattro does make things a lot easier!

E46 are 343bhp and is about 1550kg so 220bhp tonne - never seen one on the dyno but from what ive seen E36's and E34's put down im guessing here but around 290 wheel hp?.
E36 M3 Evo is 321bhp is about 1500 ish Kg 210bhp/tonne. - they will put down about 265 wheel hp.
E34 M5 3.8 are 340bhp are around 1650-1700kg 200bhp/tonne - a really healthy one which is getting all of its horses will put down around 285 wheel hp (mine was 330 crank 275 wheel which is good by all accounts as they struggle to make book figures)

Now im only guessing how much transmission loss an S2 runs at but id say if your homefry is making 280 crank then id be surprised if you were seeing more than 210 at the wheels???.
If your living with a E46 M3 then its either got serious Vanos problems which isnt uncommon or the owner hasnt got a clue how to drive it which isnt uncommon either! .
Unless you know the driver concerned and speak to them before and after then i take all 'races' with a pinch of salt as you do not know how commited they are and how handy they are at timing shift points/gearchanges etc.
My car feels healthy - i think the remapped ecu has learnt a bit today as ive been on a long drive but i still dont think its 3.8 M5 performance then again when youve had a Golf with 300 odd bhp per tonne everything feels a bit flat
