I have wanted an S2 for a while now, got enough to get on the ladder, so to speak, and was looking at this one on ebay and would really appreciate advice from you guys as to what you think of this one?.....

thats a forum members car . Nothelle300 or something like that.Never seen the car but I know its had a LOT of cash spent on it. I think Dean also had all the bushes replaced with new ones but i may be wrong.
As Jamo said in your other post. An ABY makes life a lot easier. and this is a 3b. but a nicely tuned one.
Thanks guys, you've been very helpful. I'll ring Dean tomorrow and arrange a viewing. One more thing why would having an ABY engined one be easier than a 3B.....is the 6 speed better then the 5?
Assuming it's as good as the auction states (which it looks to be), for 3K it's a bargain! Go for it!! A 3B is a bit of a disadvantage if you wanna mod later as stated - BUT...
The car is already 300BHP which will be fantastic fun, trust me.
The engine has already been rebuilt with the later ABY/RS2 bearings etc so it's good for more horses later if needs be.

ABY has stronger engine bearing and on most later models metal headgasket ( 3B has a naff paper one )
6 speed box can handle more torque than the 5 speed but both cope quite well up to 300-320 bhp.
ABY has coil pack ignition over dizzy ignition on the 3B#
But that car has had an engine rebuild with the stronger bearings so no worries there
Just to say, as the engine has been rebuilt recently it'll no doubt have the metal head gasket too.
As Jamo said, 5-speed boxes are weaker, though mine seemed to handle 400+bhp without any problems (not sure how long it would have lasted though). The dizzy ignition can take some mean power, just needs to be kept in good nick and is more difficult when it comes to tuning. And you don't have those pesky coil-pack failures Oh it has a lighter flywheel too.
As an ex-3B owner, I can tell you the ABY is better for me on day-to-day and longer drives. Of course the ABY is newer, but does feel a little tighter and refined in general. That said, I do miss the 3B's responsiveness and 'raw-feel', and it's about 100kg lighter too.
I'd certainly go drive it and if you can get a ride in an ABY that's in good nick too if you get chance to see what you think. You'll pay more like 5k for an ABY with equivalent spec though.
EDIT - thought you'd be along here soon Stu As he said, biggest advatange is legally running a decatted exhaust
