AFAIK, there were only three main types of steering wheels:

1. Three spoke non-air bag sport. Available in either smooth or alcantra on the spokes, depending on the model. The UrS4 and early S2 only got the smooth (AFAIK). I think the RS2 could be had with a variety of colour alcantra on the spokes (including blue).

2. The four spoke air bag wheel. FUGLY. Grandpa wheel. Saves lives I suppose. My 93 S4 came with seat belts, ProConTen AND the four spoke air bag wheel (now gone, in its place a 3 spoke sport air bag wheel),

3. The three spoke sport air bag wheel. This was the last wheel in the series. May have been developed for the (then) new A4 because it started to show up in the 95 MY UrS6 and (probably) the RS2. Not sure about the S2. (I am sure someone here nows).

You can convert a four spoke air bag wheel to a three spoke sport wheel. Biggest trick is modifying the 4D0 951 543D slip ring (with signal light cancelling ring (tab)). I have developed 3 ways to do this and can email a pdf if any one is interested.
