One of my favorite cars. Always liked the shape of them.
What are they like to drive? I bet they are a handful with that much power going through the rear wheels.
Not wanting to actually answer ahead of the owner of this 600, I test drove a 600 SL a few years ago between Nice and Monaco on the highway and then on to the winding mountain roads.
Beautifully built car first of all, hey, it was the MB flagship at the time so it's loaded with goodies. On the highway, it goes like an atomic freight train. Acceleration is always constant and going from 0-100km/h is almost as fast as going from 100km/h till 200km/h, very impressive but never, ever brutal.
Even my grandma would've felt at ease, that's where MB engineering at the time stood out as only they could make a 400 hp car so easy to drive in those days.
On the windy roads, the car did feel a bit nose heavy and wasn't that fab to steer in really tight corners as the chasis was straining but in all fairness, it's a really heavy car that you wouldn't suspect from it's size. Also, putting down the pedal to the metal would almost always trigger the traction control which would cut the engine's power so to compare it with it's little sister the 300SL-24 for example, I really loved that one on windy roads as what it lacked in power, it made up for with better weight distribution, better handling and an overall feel that the chassis wasn't twisting as much...
A few days after the 600SL test drive, I was lucky enough to be able to test drive it's bigger, even heavier brother, the 600 SEL even though only inside Monte-Carlo for one "lap" of the GP track. The V12 felt much more appropriate in the SEL and I'll always remember tearing up the harbor incline towards the casino ( just like in the GP ) with a Ferrari in my wake who was struggling to keep up. I don't know why, but the SEL felt even more powerful than the SL... Maybe due to different traction control settings that left the SEL's engine to just give all it could...
