For Sale: MK2 Golf GTI 16v

It is with a slightly heavy heart that I write this. My Golf GTI 16v has been a loyal servant for the last 18 months, but the time has come to think about moving on.

I am in no desperate rush to sell her, but thought I would offer it to the forum first before it goes on general release. I am asking £2000 ono.

    Spec:

    MK2 Golf GTI 1.8 16v
Tornado Red and Rainbow Striped Interior
161,000 miles, with reasonable service history (not much VW though). That said it is in well above average condition and has had everything it needs and more, during my ownership, including the following using quality or OEM parts as required:

    Clear Indicators and side repeaters
    Heater matrix
    Raditator
    Radiator Fan
    All Belts
    Cambelt, Tensioner, Water Pump.
    Oil Temp Sender
    Track Rod ends
    HT Lead Set
    Full Set of Pirelli 195/50/15's
    Front Discs and pads
    Passenger Window Regulator
    New Gear lever Gaitor
    New rear Badge set
    Front Engine Mount
    Sump Gasket
    Oil Pump

As you can see it has been well cared for. However it is nearly 17 years old andhas a few negatives:

Cam Chain is noisy and requires replacement (£20 in parts)
Gear change is slightly loose but does not impact driving pleasure
The headlining is coming loose above windscreen
There are very small 2mm wide areas of paint on the edges of the doors and bonnet that show through to white primer
The drivers seat has a small tear on the outer bolster
The trim on the boot lip is damaged
    It has a Tow bar!
    The alloys are not perfect!
The usual front end stone chips...

However, it is a very honest straight and clean car with no rust to speak of anywhere. I am sure you have all seen pics before, but here are a few of the best:

Having written all this, I am still not sure I want to sell her, but feel I need a change to something slightly more confortable and practical for the 80 miles a day to work and back. So I am going to use the '80 Sport Edition and buy a family car for Anna instead....

    Nuts

I think you're nuts to sell it, unless you need diesel mileage?

I presume it has power steering? Get a set of the decent Mk 2 Recaros with alcantera inserts. Spend some money on the car to revitalise your interest/enthusiam in it. It should reduce your boredom with it? A bit extreme but the sound and the pull of forced induction is something else, sell the 16V engine and box and put in a G60? End up with RHD G60. Or replace the bottom end with a 2.0L.

Park it up for a month and use the Audi 80 and see do you really like the change of commuting vehicle?

All of the above only my tenners worth.

Keen to see what happens/what you do? Technical queries are all very well on this forum, but it is the reasons people do what they do with their cars that I find interesting also.

    Best wishes.

      You will regret it!

The girlfriend went from a Renault 14 to driving my GTI 8V, couldn't wipe the smile off her face for hours driving the 90 mile commute, playing with bigger faster cars, they usually lost!

      Sell something else!

I am looking to see if it will make £2k. I am starting to use the '80 Sport from tomorrow. Perhaps I will change my mind shortly, you never know....

Sound advice guys. (Well apart from modifiying it! Its fast enough as it is... )

        Cheers,

        Steve.

No harping just encouragement - hopefully

Agreed, only engine up-rating if existing unit breaks beyond economic repair.

          1. Re-bush the gear linkage, shorter shift - ( if only you are going to drive it )

          2. Only stick balancing weights on the inside of the alloys

          3. Get passenger seat from the breakers to repair your bolster with the local auto upholster, before all Mk 2 s are gone to car heaven, the same as most Mk 1s.

          4. Black front indicator lenses or put in silver coated bulbs and take out the amber section of the lens to lose the fried egg look.

          5. With the onset of darker nights, and assuming 90 amp alternator, relay - home made or buy ready made, the two dip and four main beams, use 100/160 and 130. Metal shells will take the heat, but bulbs won’t last quite as long, but well worth it all the same. You’d be amazed by this one!

          6. G-60 anti roll bars or G-60 shocks and springs.

          7. G-60 front brake carriers, calipers and the 280 vented discs.

          8. Take apart the wiper spindles, clean them and re-grease and the wipers will fly like new ones.

          9. Make sure it has a reasonable decent radio and speakers, and a front loading CD slot for any new CD that you suddenly want to play with minimal hassle.

          10. Basically, make sure everything on the car works as it should, so there is nothing to annoy you repeatedly everything it doesn't work when you go to use it.

          11. The car obviously has had a load of time and money spent on it and only needs a little more money and some effort to make it next to perfect, consider paying others to do it for you if you’re stuck for time. It seems a shame to sell it as the “new” car will soak up a load of time money and effort also.

          12. Easy to sound like a saint via a keyboard, but my own car affairs are not exactly in tip top order, i.e. I am sure I’d get loads of “helpful” advice that is easy to give, but harder to follow if I ever started a thread looking for suggestions on my respective cars’ situations.

          13. These are only my own suggestions obviously, but some possible food for thought for you, or for other thread “readers’?

          14. As mentioned, looking forward to see what transpires. Very nice car as is.

          Kind regards.

That is a lovely looking car.
            1994 Audi S2 Avant - in pieces
2006 Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0TFSi - goes fast
            1985 Audi 90 quattro - is wet

In some ways you are right. I definitely won't be modifying it. The performance is not a problem, it is the little niggles about an old car that are spoiling it for me. The timing chain needs doing, the standard lights aren't great, (I know about the relay mod) the headlining needs repairing, not a difficult job just time consuming.

I don't have the time to fix it myself or the money to put it into a garage at the moment, but then I could just as easily have the same problems and more on another car. We certainly won't be spending a lot of money so it will be abother 10 year old car plus....

I still have to MOT it this month too.

              Cheers,

              Steve.

I'm not really sure. I think I am having an old man moment. I drove the '80 Sport to work today, it was everso comfy and quiet and the stereo will sound brilliant when I get an amp and some new speakers!

If I don't sell it before the spring, I can see me wanting to drive it a lot again....

Its just another Golf GTi - get rid and get over yourself... I've never understood what the fuss was about with them. As a hot hatch goes - then fair enough - 30 million people can't be wrong I spose - maybe its just me - I just don't find them special !

It looks nice but i'd have thought you'd keep it and save yourself hassle time and money looking for a replacement car for it if its in this good condition and nothing major is wrong with it, you know the history etc of the car.

@s2central.net - I can see your point, i've had a few vw's but they have just never made me really interested in keeping them unlike audi's.
