What tyre size is need to be equivalent to the standard 205/55x16

I am not sure on the spacers, but I think you may need them for the front at least...

As for tyres you can use this to try all different sizes, http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

With a quick play all of these sizes fall with in the 3% limit... 225/45R17 - 205/45R17 - 235/40R17.

Can run them without spacers but they look much better with 15mm spacers.

I ran a set of these without spacers on my Avant no problem. Just look better with spacers.
