Call 034 Motorsports who deal with specifically VW and Audi motors, I am sure you know of them. Talk to Sam, he is their Audi 5cyl expert. I talked to him when I was thinking about building this motor. He has built and helped others build several turbo application 7a motors as well as AAN motors and explained that the block has the same casting as well as the crank and rods being the same on the 7a as the AAN. 034 makes their own turbo kits for the 7a. With the experience 034 and Sam have in building 7a,AAN,3B,etc. motors, I am going to go with their answer for now.Comment

OK fine but you are wrong. The pistons are not forged as they are in a 20vt bottom end and compression is a lot higher. The big end bearings are not the same spec i.e. sputters. Sure you can stick a turb a 7A with good results but don't be fooled into thinking its the same as an AAN.
Anyway, its a good price for what is it so GLWS

And pistons size is not the same - 7A block and pistons are 82.5mm. You can make tubo conversion on low boost but everything over 0.8bar you will need piston and compretion modification. Otherwise it's a very good platform for convertion but is requiring an investment to custom pistons, roods and head work related with cooling.Last edited by Nik0las; 25 June 2012, 14:34.Comment

Ok, thank you for the new information. I guess I just assumed people would know that the pistons are not the same, the pistons are pretty much never the same from an NA motor to a turbo motor as far as material and compression goes, thats a given. As far as the bearings go, yes, regular bearings and sputter bearings are different. Turbo motors are not required to run sputter bearings, that being said, if you cross reference the part numbers on kolbenschmidts website you will find that they are the same bearing size and you can run the same standard or sputter bearings in either motor. I also am not buying that the AAN runs sputters stock, thats an older motor and kolbenschmidt lists it as newer technology. As far as the block cc size goes, I did not know that, thanks for the info. Either way, if you are buying an NA motor to convert or Turbo motor to make medium to big power with, it is the better idea for reliability to replace rods and pistons anyways.Comment

You are right, only ADU (RS2) had sputter bearings, not AAN or 3B. And ADU had sputter only in the upper big end bearings.Ok, thank you for the new information. Ok, I have seen them anywhere from $600 - $1000. Personally I am trying to get $950 because it has a completely rebuilt top end and all fresh seals and water pump. Nobody has tried to make me an offer yet unfortunately. I am not that firm on price, somebody has to want a 7A!? hahaComment
