89 Audi Quattro Coupe - changing 2.3 l motor to 2.3 turbo

Hi,

I just got an 89 Audo Quattro Coupe with a 2.3 litre motor.
I'm planning to change to motor to a 2.3 litre turbo.

Anyone out here who has been doing this before and give me some lessons learned?

For example - can I use the injection pump of the existing motor for the turbo?

Also, I have the wiring loom for the turbo motor - how easy is it to connect it to the car wiring? Any tips?

Anything else to know? Any help highly appreciated - what an exciting project!!!

turboengines are only 2,2 litres.....,but the engineblock will fit in.you will need all the parts from the turbo CAR to do the change. IT,S NOT SO EASY,to do that.

Don't know how with 3b, but fitting AAN to the coupe was quite easy . Non mechanic mindend person like myself managed to do that. It means every stupid monkey can do that

Note 1 - to do conversion is one thing, to do it PROPER WAY is way another story .
Note 2 - if someone has life beyond garage - it will take at least half a year to do conversion for one person ... .

Today I watched over MC2 engine with intentions to fit to the typ85 coupe, however I'm not sure I want to do that . Even if guy asks only ~200eur for complete engine from 90' car... 20v I5 are the best , and less mess with CIS ... And sooner or later one will need 20v ... That's a law ...

I've finally got the motor details - the motor I want to put in is a MC1 from a 5000 CS Turbo, ex USA import. (My car has a 2.3 NA 10 valve AG WAUZZZ 8BZKA0063810414048).

I guess that I can keep the fuel injection setup? Does it need to be adjusted because of the turbo? Does the electrical wiring suit?

For a start, you'll need the fuel metering unit / airflow meter assembly from the 5000T. The airflow meter sensor plate won't lift to allow enough fuel through if routed via a turbo. Apart from that, it's possible to use the existing wiring, but you won't be able to run a lot of boost, as you are unlikely to get enough retard to the ignition timing under boost to prevent detonation (pinging). Power will be down on the 5000T as a result.

Best to make a proper job of it and use the ECU and loom from the 5000T. Plugs will be different, but not hard to adapt.

Oh my. Its 10vt, I'm allergic to those . Mate of mine (MC2) bought one yesterday. Need to hide somewhere , because I know who will need to help him put that damn scary thing in to a coupe

If seriously:
1. It's not recommended use N/A CIS (fuel injection thingy). You can use MC CIS, however you will need to "turn it over" like it's done in urq. PPl use golf gti rubber CIS "cap". This is needed because there is no room for turbo hoses in coupe motor bay.
2. Electrical wiring may suit, however I think it's better to use MC's ECU (MAC11?). Not sure, but I think it controls ignition in some elegant way like 20v (3b) does. Wiring is no big deal if you have electrical schematics of both cars and know what you are doing.

That was my not-so-elegant solution to running a CIS 10vt (MC from a 5ktq). Airbox lid is from a '88-92 80/90 (4 or 5cyl works), rubber boot is from a NORMAL Rabbit (er, Golf), does NOT need to be from a GTi, rubber boot to turbo inlet pipe is a hacked up 5ktq "knee" pipe, quite ugly but will work. Lower airbox section is a modified Jamex frame complete with the Jamex 3-layer filter (could also use a factory paper element or K&N panel filter). You can see that I had to lower it a good inch, and it was also moved toward the fender by at least 3/4 of an inch. The front corner actually hits the inner fender, and with H1/H1 projectors from the RS2/late-S2/late-Cabrio there is also essentially zero clearance between the low beam and lid and only around 1/4" between the turbo inlet pipe and high beam. Plus, clearance between the intake pipe and intake manifold is almost non-existant, and the banjo fittings on the fuel lines are also quite close to the intake pipe.

Many of those reasons are why I was going to run the 10vt with an 034EFI IIB setup. Then I found some 20vt parts to go with my lonely 7A head.....
