This might be an interesting read when you'll push it full throttle over 5000rpm

Hehe, yeah I'm not a big fan of the WG either. It sounds great echoing through a narrow street in teh dead of night (and wakes every living thing within) but at any other time sounds like a blowing exhaust. I'll be having a 3" Downpipe when the car is run in, and then the external pipe will go. Hopefully before Aug 17th, else I'll be terrorising your town of Liege

Steve - notice there's no pics of the engine bay yet I'll tell you what, you can take her for a spin if I can get some tutoring - "Engine Bay cleaning for dummies"

Been dicussed before on seperate threads and not really recommended this side of the pond.

Also the technique applies to bikes more than cars.

Work out the cost of new parts and labour if applicable, then multiply by 5. ..about that

Seriously though few people will answer that, i know i've stopped counting

I would say between £2-£3.5k bill for this amount of work going on labour and parts costs....sorry to be guesstimating Ross ...

Labour wise is about 40ish hours. But dont forget all the little bits that cost the money, balancing (worth doing), machining work if needed, new pistons, maybe new valve guides, the list goes on. I would guess that about 3.5k would cover it, including pistons and a set of SPM rods. If you want more expensive bits put in then add some more!! My Arrow rods were 1k on there own.

Well, Tom is about spot on - not surprising as he did the job

All-in I put a little over 4K I reckon, though this did include MOT, front tyres, rad replacement, rear caliper + handbrakes cable replacement. And I can only assume the fixing of my rear boot that never opened or locked properly? Found that out last week when I left my keys on the rear parcel shelf and suddenly found the boot closed and locked like a charm! Naturally the doors were locked but it's a nice touch cheers mate.

For those interested in a rebuild, all I can say is make sure you have all the bits in advance, and triple-check what you need. All those bolts, belts, gaskets, worn out hose replacements etc add up to a few hundred quid too. It's expensive, but if you want a super-smooth enigne that is better than when it left the factors, will take bags of power reliably and go for another 200k then it's well-spent.

                            @AbsS2, Spec is as follows:

                            -3B Engine
                            -SPM rods
-Overbore pistons, block bored + honed
-head checked + rebuilt w/ new valve guides, seals + valve grinding
                            -RS2 EM
                            -RS2 main/bigend bearings, head gasket
                            -Clutchnet clutch

All bolts, nuts replaced, balanced @ crank to +/- .5g.

although thats a pretty stiff figure I bet its well worth it - just think for half the money you can have an Audi A6 tdi rebuilt eh Tom You'll be a master engine rebuilder at this rate.

Actually any ideas on getting an S2 head rebuilt with new cam chain, valve stem oil seals etc etc etc etc?

                              Cheers,

                              David
