Well on a 3B you'll definitely need to do the head-gasket if it's not been done already. The big-end bearings will need doing also. So start wth planning a rebuild. You can get the clutch replaced while the engine is out, with a performance item.

Once you've got the head off the bores can be inspected, and you may find it's OK but then you might end up needing to go with a rebore + oversize pistons like I did.. get a set of forged rods if you want to get as much torque as possible. Or save a few pennies, and the car can be mapped conservatively in the mid-range.

Best to have all the other parts together and rebuild it with the 'upgrades'. There's too many options really - do you want a stock-like look? If so, go RS2 all the way, it's been done many times before, fits well and goes like hell. You'll get 370bhp with the remap.

If you want to go a bit more custom, I'd recommend a tubular manifold with a GT3071, and a big-IC or RS2-IC and you'll be good for 450bhp. Still a Forge DV and some silicone hoses on and she'll be ready for more power

With 400+ you'll have to deal with the lag. To be honest, you'll find the car has different driving character, and it's just a case of adapting to it. You'll find it sluggish round town and off the roundabouts, coz you'll instinctively be expecting that push between 2500-3000rpm but won't feel it. But once you start taking it to 3,500-4k before you shift you'll get it back with twice the bite and of course, when you boot it you won't need to shift until 7,200rpm
