    I5 20VT-powered MK2 Golf? Possible?

In my current collection of cars, I've got a modded ABY S2 Coupé, a modded E46 M3 CSL, a Corrado VR6 2.9 12v and a currently dead big-bumper Mk2 Golf GTi 8v. Sitting in my garrage, I've also got a (standard) ABY 20v motor, and I'm thinking about dropping it into the front of the Mk2. Mk2 VR6 conversions are common, but the I5 motor is much longer (abeit thinner) than the VR motor. My question is; is it possible to drop the ABY motor into the front of the Mk2? Has the conversion been done before? Would the engine need to be mounted laterally on transversely? I'm assuming that you would need custom mounts for the engine. Or should I just sell the ABY motor and buy a 24v VR6 and dump that in?
    Thanks for any help.

          Thanks, that's a great help
I'm thinking of sorting the body first. Something along the lines of big steel arches, Ralle front end and a fair bit of smoothing.
Would a Synchro drivetrain be the best way forward? I can probably get my hands on one, I was thinking Haldex but that might be a little too expensive...

Obviously the transmission will decide how you mount the engine. A Haldex system would require the engine to be mounted transversely. But if you want "real" 4WD you'll need to mount it longitudinally. Like Grant Parker's MkI.

Can anyone explain how the f**k engine output is taken from this engine and combined to propshaft>driveshaft please?? (I have an idea but has anyone got pictures of a similair system??)

Theres GOT to be loads of drivetrain losses with this surely??

Syncro drivetrain will last about 5 minutes with that engine fitted.
Why bother mounting a big heavy lump up front of a lightweight car when you can buy the 4 banger 1.8t lump for not alot nowadays and retain some sort of balance.
Sure if your going to fit the Quattro 4wd system as Grant Parker has done then i might understand but that car is not a Golf anymore merely a Mk1 bodyshell over a Quattro imho.

I might just get a 2.0 16v block and turbo it instead. It does seem rather alot of work just for something individual...

an I5 will not go transversly, and imho, there's no need to try it. my roomate has an A2VR6 and the crank pulley is DAMN close to the frame rail. you actually have to bash the rail in a certain spot to get the engine to fit and even then, you can barely change the serp belt. we've had the combined misfortune to have both an empty VR6 and 7A block sitting on the garage floor side by side and the 7A engine is a good 6 inches longer (if not more...it's been a while). i'm sure you could get it in there by cutting the fram rail away etc.... but i have serious concerns about chassis strenght after mods like that......
