Looks like a few guys have done this before, hard work? There might still be a 2.8 q 80 k plate still available, so i was thinking why not S2 it? If you're out there give me a shout as i'd like to have a chat. I dont have a problem with the spannering since i've normally got dirt up to my elbows and in my ears! The cosmetics really wont be a problem bar sourcing the parts but on the mechanicals i'd like to know what trouble may be ahead of me.

Why waste money buying a 2.8Q if all your going to do is rip the running gear out?
Might as well buy a cheap 5 pot Q , save yourself a load of money as the 2.8's still hold money better than the 5 potters.
Also youve got to ask yourself do you really want a saloon over a Coupe or Avant because your building a car thats already out there apart from a boot!

A 90-20v would be the best starting point as its 90% S2 bits, V6 models will have a few complications with the different layout under the bonnet. Its easyly done though as i'm planning the same conversion with a cq20v.

Cheap 5 pots, where exactly? Seem to be holding their value better than most, darn coupe fanatics! Didn't want to mess around with repairing bodywork so the B4 seemed a good start point being slightly newer and also how many variants of transmission could they have for the q options of the car? eg 20v, v6 and 20vt i think?

There was only one model B4 80 that came with a 5 pot, had the 2.3 10v (NG) but never with quattro so a non starter.
The V6 80 quattro has different engine mounts positions, so factor in welding in 5 cylinder mount positions.

If you want a B4 then I have seen a few 2.3 10v ones about although none quattro. If you could find one that would be the best. failing that I would find a V6. There won't be a huge number of mods you will need to do. Engine mounts would need to be made as a V6 brackets are bolted to the chassis legs, also radiator housing. The advantages of a B4 over a B3 would be in my opinion: Flared arches, fold down rear seats and if you could get hold of RS2 running gear it would go in (fairly straight forward) including the rear brake setup which is a big plus.
Also it would mean one less Audi 90 B3 conversion, thus making mine a little bit more special
