  • My RS2 resurrection.

Its been a while me posting on here, but here's a bit of a background of my RS2.

I purchased 1 of the 12 NZ RS2's back in 2008 - a 30th present to myself. I daily drove the car between 2008 - 2016. Family, life and other cars etc got in the road as they do so the RS2 had been driven sparingly, until it got a power steering pump leak and had a few other minor issues. Its now time to get it sorted!

First up is the power steering pump, I looked all over the place for a replacement for one - the UK, US and Europe and had no luck. I then came across an Ebay shop called "Pump Club". I rolled the dice and decided to order one. It should be fitted next week so fingers crossed!!

Other jobs include new handbrake cables with I ordered at my local Audi dealer and come via Audi Tradition. I also have new rear discs and pads to fit and replace all the fluids.

Its Spring here in NZ so Im looking forward to having the car back on the road for summer.

Well with these things it often 2 steps forward and one step backwards . . . .

The new power steering pump is fitted, as is the new rear discs. The discs are EBC, I purchased them a few years ago from Demontweeks. They didn't come up as RS2 discs, but I cross-referenced them myself with Porsche P/N/s and had a win (SKU: EBCD1178). Im also doing the same with some rear pads made by Stoptech (309.06080) - so they are on the way from the US.

Honestly, everything for these cars you pretty much need to source yourself here in NZ. I guess its the NZ way.

Downsides? The handbrake cables the local Audi dealer got me are the wrong ones - they are for an S2/80 wagon.

Also, after a quick drive the car isn't boosting properly. Maybe only at waste gate spring pressure? Something else to look into. The car is running smooth however, but the fan kicks in two bars over the 90C line. Id much rather that was at 90C.

Another issue is the speedo had decided not work. Revcounter is fine. Does anyone know where the speedo pickup is?

Finally, one of the rear Bilstein B6 dampers is leaking. However Bilstein isn't making B6 dampers for the RS2 anymore. These rear shocks share the same P/N as the B5 A4/S4 - however, as I think is common knowledge the spring seat ring has to be machined and relocated lower down the damper body. So what does the Bilstein website recommend to replace the B6's with? B8's! From my research the B8's: "Bilstein B8 Performance Plus dampers are a performance upgrade to OE dampers designed to be paired with aftermarket lowering springs." So hopefully the spring seat ring on the B8's won't have to be relocated lower like on the B6's. Anyone fitted B8's to an S2/RS2 and know the ride hight results? Oh, and the B8's are coming from the US.

Handbrake cables were available from Tradition when i looked last.
Check all the little vac pipes are holding vacuum then do a boost leak test. If that's all good, next check your fuel delivery rate is good at the injection rail. If that's good check the boost loss thread on tbe forum.
Rear brakes are almost identical to 944 turbo.
The speedo feed is a plug next to the front left inner cv. Normally, its the connections inside the cluster. The long thin pins. Be careful if you have the newer style cluster with torx screws on the dial faces as the speedo pin is connected to a clock spring and removal is difficult.
I can't help re the dampers as I've always used Koni. I know another member got Bilstein UK to re seat the perch for him for free.
            Good luck.

Thanks for that info. Koni rear dampers are no longer available from my research.

Yes, hard to find. But if you find a used set, Koni will refurbish them for you.

Original shocks are available from Tradition but quite expensive.

I can get the B6's rebuilt, however that's more expensive than buying new.

Heres a pic of the old girl.

                      The spec is:

                      Colour: RS Blue
                      Interior: Black leather
No Sunroof - kinda rare option?

New Zealand spec RS2 all have roof rails and no indicators in the front guards. They also have factory hightop brake lights in the rear window. Oh, and speedo/mileage is in kms not miles. Interestingly when the RS2 was launched in NZ fuel wise we only had 91 unleaded and 96 leaded. There are "Only 96 Leaded" stickers inside the fuel flap. Cats are in place so I don't know how that worked?

Given your temperature gauge is possibly not reading correctly and you've got a boost issue, I'd check out your MFTS as they don't age well and it could be responsible for both your problems.

I agree with you. Definitely worth checking.

I took the RS2 for a run recently, I did a U-turn and the speedo started working again. Happy with that.

Also, the Bilstein B8’s arrived earlier in the week. They are definitely shorter than the originals. The lower platform on the B8 doesn’t seem as low as the originals that I’ve had stores for years. Overall the B8 is shorter. How do you think the rear ride height will be with standard springs?
