Ok. I can see it is in your interest for Ross to have a new pump if you're doing the work.

I would have a new oil pump if I was rebuilding an engine.

What are they £40? Cheap insurance policy IMO...

        LOL...

As for the oil pump, I guess at £250 it's one of those things I'd be tempted to not replace... parts alone are gonna eat all my budget for this one! If it all looks perfect then maybe it can be used again. But I'll probably end up using it... plus, I can understand that Corey doing the work would not want it to fail and then be tarred for doing a crap job!! Wanna ensure this is done once and done right. And I PROMISE to avoid big brick walls in future

The 034 valves are a bit of an experiment really, I'm intrgued to see what difference they make (techincally, what should they do? lol) and want a good head after all, I like to exceed my goals :mischeif:

They should increase efficiency at higher flow rates and therefoer allow for higher power, Are you combining this with high lift cams for maximum effect? And, are you getting any of
              • Head ported & polished.
              • IM / EM port matched to head.
              • EM polished (be a good idea if you're trying to minimise exhaust losses).

Be interesting to see the results as it's not common practice as, having seen an S2 head recently, they really don't look very restrictive!

Good luck Ross, you lucky sod

I had the little argument in my head about whether or not its worth doing a new oil pump on my car. Although I almost never see the 5cyl running with oil pump problems, its a big thing not to change, we all know what happens if it fails. I decided to go on the side of caution and change it. That said 3B pumps are best part of £100 cheaper.

What engine bits are you using then Ross?? Surely its just a case of chucking the 3b lump straight in with the ABY head? If thats the case, then why do you need to change the oil pump, the old one was spot on IIRC..

I think you will disapointed with the gains from big valves on your setup. I guess it depends on your future mods. But std valves have been used on power outputs over 600bhp.

ARP bolts would also be a good idea whilst its apart for peace of mind, but having said that, i had no problems when running 475bhp, but that must have been the limit as at 550bhp the head was lifting.

Ross wants to have the engine to RS2 spec (ie water pump etc) so the 3B pump is of no use to keep future servicing easy (ie he only has to remember one engine to get the bits for, rather than he needs x from this and y from that)
ARP's have already been spec'd for the head and the mains.
Tom I assume the rods you fitted in the block had ARP fastners already?
Not opened the old 3B lump yet so we don't know.

As Corey said - the intention was to push for a full RS2 spec pump + replacement cooler as that was what i wanted. I guess I could 'go 3B' just to make to project easier n cheaper, and require less new parts.

GTi is the goal so i may have to make a few comprimises, which goes against the grain, but I don't want to delay. Anyone wanna buy a kidney? Or 2 - I hear home dialysis is now available

The SPMs are fitted with ARPs, jobs a good 'un there. That bottom-end was balanced + built to "Tom's car spec"

Look at this poor ABY lump, with that big ugly dual-mass beastie attached to it

The head that was removed is crack-free and ready for rebuilding with a few exotic parts that found their way across the pond :mischeif:
