    Hypothetically....

Just one of those gazing out the window moments of inspiration but hypothetically what would the major issues be if someone was to get their hands on a decent 80 or 90 and shove their S2 workings inside, thereby fashioning themselves a RHD S2 sedan?

I've got no garage and i'm having enough trouble getting the buggr running as it is so I can't see me tackling this idea too soon but could be a good one for the future.

Let's have your musings lads (and ladies if there are any female members. are there?)

    cheers

what do you mean mate? If it's been done then that's good news then, cos it can be done OK yes?
I didn't mean to suggest that it hasn't been done before. Just wondered what major issues I might face if I was to arrive home, strike a manly pose and announce to the missus that i'm going to do something clever. Apart from the obvious issue of my missus not believing i'll pull it off that is

Yes, this might be a nice project..... for the experts, because most common people don't quite fancy a 80
On the other hand it would be the ultimate stealth car :mischeif:

Maybe the 80 model is still too much on the road to convert it to s2 sedan. Don't know why but from what i heard most people like the coupe's and avants more. Though proper 80's are still nice.

Female's don't understand the beauty and legendary of urquattro's and s2's
My girl like's the TT but that's about it

        Cheers,
        Tim

Havent got time as im at work but im sure someone can fill you in or search the forum but i think Audi actually did an S2 sedan iirc and (but not 100% sure) an RS2 sedan possibly maybe and as for conversions yes seen a few on here and else where

I intend to build an ABY saloon from my 80 2.8 quattro when money will allow. I have been looking into it a bit and it does involve more than I first thought. The diff ratio is different on the S2 so the whole drive train would have to be changed, I'm not sure is my current driveshafts will be ok. The good thing about the V6 80 is that I think the 01E CGR gearbox will fit straight on to the sub frame with the correct mountings. Another issue is the engine mountings, I would need to get the ones for the I5 engine welded on. Also the engine loom and ecu would of course need to be changed.

There are also lots of small things that need changing which is why I would really need an S2 avant to do the transplant rather than an S4. An ABY coupe would be reasonably ok but I would need to find at least the rear diff and prop from an avant if not more.

As I said it isn't something I can afford to do right now and also I would probably need to find a written off S2 avant but as the boot of the coupe is too small for me and I don't want an avant it is a conversion I have been wanting to do for a while.

              thanks lads.

80Quattro - good luck mate. Sounds like there's more than I originally thought there with the diff ratios and all. As always it's the old cash problem that stops or slows so many fine ideas.

laser avant s2 - I know Audi did an S2 sedan but as far as I know it was only LHD. I'll search about a bit to see if i'm wrong or if I can see anyone that has done a conversion already.

Floppy - you're absolutely right mate. You'd certainly scare a few people in a subtly converted 80. And ladies are sadly rather short sighted regarding older Audis. Thankfully my missus loves my coupes but unfortunately she demands 4 doors for the baby and accessories.. BUT she doesn't like the S2 avant. What is a man to do? hence the question about creating an S2 sedan type thing.

Right - I better do a bit of work now and stop my S powered day dreaming

              cheers

Its certainly a feasible project, if you have a donor car its mostly plug and play. Only catch i can think of would be the 6speed gearbox needing a shorter prop shaft.

A 5cyl 80/90 as a base would make life much easier, easiest route would be a 90q20v. Later v6 engined 80's would require a little more work due to different engine mounts etc.

P.S. If you want 4 doors have you thought about a ur-s4?

That's good thinking re the 90q20v. My s2 is a 3B 5 speed coupe so maybe the gearbox wouldn't be a problem?
A ur-S4 would be the daddy and I could end up looking out for one. Just having this thought since I have an S2 on the drive with rear end damage that I need to get fixed and wondering if the money i'd pay for the repair might get me the 80/90 I need. Of course with my level of expertise many of the parts could rust before I get it finished. hehe

Ahh ok, if you have a shortened 3B then a 90q20v would be a doddle to convert, same gearbox etc so you would only need to swap engine/loom and a few other under bonnet accessories.

Trousers are mine mate but I don't want to push her to the point she feeds them to me. She wasn't that happy with the purchase of a broken S2 to begin with. It's a bloody miracle she puts up with me as it is. If I don't find a way to convince her to keep the coupe or an avant I might end up with an A4 or A6. 2.8 quattro would be nice but still prefer my S2 in some form.

right - i must consider how to deliver this idea to she that controls half of the joint account.....

Or I may just attempt to convince her to keep the coupe if I fix the back end.
