    Project UR500 (English Panzertank)

I did briefly start a project thread but it didn't contain much. So will start this thread to show my restoration work and “subtle” modifications to my 1986 UR Quattro. She's been off the road since late 2006 due to turbo on its way out and rust (wow a rusty URQ i hear you cry!). Project aim is a factory finish exterior using Fibreglass panels for weight saving and finished in Alpine white. Engine will be a 7a lump rebuilt and turbocharged to put out just over 500bhp (Reg plate ends 547 but I doubt I can get it exact). Final weight will be sub 1100kg and as close to 1000kg as possible.

As I got her back in january 2006, overall a clean pearl white Quattro with 122k on the clocks and the delightful cost of £2k...

Knackered turbo and a few other issues (that dreaded rust) meant I took her off the road to sort engine and patch up the bits that were rotting….

So the rust chopping became a lot more serious…

Had a White CQ here which has been good metal donor (surprisingly the only areas that aren’t rusty are the areas I need for my URQ!).

Sadly I neglected working on her over winter (cold weather and no electricity in workshop till late november) but the last two weeks have been productive, so I’ll bring this up to speed then will be able to update regularly…

      Cut the rear firewall out…

Then got the shell sandblasted last week inside and the engine bay for £80.

Blasting revealed some bodged repair jobs in the boot (and I criticise my welding, this was apparently done at a professional garage, although it wasn’t visible when I viewed the car due to sealant).

Anyway last week I cracked on with getting the front end welding sorted as my New mig welder arrived (alas no gas so been using gasless flux wire 0.8mm).

My Fibreglass wings also arrived over the weekend from aelred. The fitment is pretty good bar the top lip near A pillar windscreen base… I’m guessing the moulds have pulled slightly when being made and caused the wing tip to curve out. Not to worry they need flattening down in areas and modifying to get a factory finish.

Fibreglass one piece bumpers also ordered last week and should be here Friday so I’m told. Once rust is all cured and shell is in etch primer I will endeavour to get it sent off to have my custom cage made up and fitted (would do it myself but I don’t rate my welding and I’d prefer a top notch job done.)

Cheers, I'm only 22 (same age as Mr chef terry bullwon!) currently doing my motorsport and business management degree at university..... I don't have a massive tool list at moment so most fab work involves grinder, a marker pen and good eyesight lol. Teaching myself to weld but hoping to do a City and Guilds qualification this summer in Mig and possibly try get myself confident with Tig.

Pete - cheers mate, took me nearly as long to write this thread as it did to do the welding today lol.

Not much progress although engine bay is in primer and my one piece fibreglass bumpers have arrived. I'm not spending anything for a week or two as the last 2months i've spent nearly £2k on various car parts and tools....
