lol, yes I hope to join you guys later on this year for a 'ring trip.
Been thinking about it since I joined on here to come over for a visit too, but the car needs to be done first, then we'll see. Not much left now.

I like the way of priortizing you done on your car, going the route by suspension, brakes and power. Usually its not before having the 600bhp engine and standard brakes/suspension unleashed before a tight 90 degree bend that one discovers that problem

Thanks for the kind words Andy, and speed on!

Ps, more pics of you and your car on the ring is a must

Chassis first, power later, it's a good mantra and has served me well with the S2 especially, I realised that after almost stacking it due to the standard brakes being that I had to upgrade, had a few moments on the knackered suspension too... now it's more down to the stupid RARB that I have making the car a bit unstable when off the power but that's nothing that a bit of throttle can't sort

Be good to go on a more intrenational 'ring trip with more S2s. Couldn't make the last one Bo organised but I'm looking at one in October and also looking at a UK organised track day at Spa as it's on the way home

Nice write up dude. Goes to show what a Decent S2 can do without insane amounts of power

Cheers, you only have to see HPMuirt on track to realise just what a standard S2 is capable of

Nice write up andy, and def agree with the brakes. Nearly ended up in petrol station sign once because of them

TOO TRUE-BUT if you have a light car you don't need big brakes and rock solid suspension.

When i built my mk1 gti, i did the usual G60 brakes/disc rear, coilovers/eibach ARBs, urethane bushes etc but lack of funds forced me to put the 16v on hold so i stuck an old 8v back in until i got the readies- a LOT of WAY more powerful cars had problems staying with it- once a straight came they closed the gap but in the corners............and then the valver was done and life was good .............Then i got the Mrs knocked up and had to buy a sensible car.........................

lol - and there was me asking on facebook if you was going to start a thread.

I ain't been on much lately this weekend (they don't have wi-fi at the pubs/parties i've been to)

Good writeup and enjoy hearing about how your getting on, I too have got nearly everything to do a complete suspension rebuild, just gotta pick up the last two or three bits hopefully tommorow.

I remember when I was first starting to look on this site about s2's after jas11n told me a bit about s2dudes car coming onto this site and seeing that first picture you posted in this thread of your s2. Its good to see the cars still in good hands (tho a bit oily ) Look forward to seeing/hearing how you get on breaking the 300 mark. I want to get mine RR'ded again to see how its doing because I had a boost leak at weston's the last time.

Good down to earth write up!

What was the final cause of the boost leak / going into safety mode when you first got the car?

If your opinion on the fitting of a front ARB to the rear has changed, does this mean that ideally, funds allowing, you'd fit a Whitline one?

Would be keen to hear of your opinions when you fit the alloy subframe bushes. ditto with whatever suspension you decide on?

Is it on Koni's and std springs, short memory, you have may mentioned this earlier in the thread?

Any photos of the offending bits that have broken over the years to allow others to have a BTDT moment, without having to actually to for real?

I'd encourage others to post a similar real life thread on their experiences so far with their respective car or isolated once mechanical incidents as it makes for fascinating reading.

It's why car mags on non new cars are so good to read.

Nice to see you are able to drive / enjoy the car everyday.

                  Kind regards.

Cheers for the kind words chaps

David, boost leak was a knackered O ring in the IC from where the car had been poorly put back together after some paint. Mark H mod cured that. There were small splits in the small bore piping too and this was cured by replacing with silicon stuff. The IC and turbo had a lot of corrosion at the joints that I clened off. I had a leaking OE S2 DV which was replaced with a 710N, that lasted nearly 2 years and I then replaced it with a small body Forge DV007. The first Forge I got leaked like a sieve and that was replaced FOC by Forge but I was far from impressed with the snotty note that accompanied the DV and the pair of Jubilee clips contained in the package

The FARB isa good mod and my opinion of it is that it's great but it's very aggressive and did cause the back to slide off power but on power grip is all worthwhile, although now that I have the same tyres all round this seems to have calmed down a bit. I'm running a much stiffer bar than a whiteline which many have commented is not enough. There is a 22mm FARB that might be perfect with the 26mm up front. If I had an RS2 item then I'd not have the same problems.

Koni adjustables and standard springs, all bushings are OE rubber. Not sure it needs anything more for the time being as it's pretty bumpy but the top mounts are a weak link and I have it on good authourity that the aluminium subframe bushes are a good bet. Other thought is that it's already bumpy so what will a bit more bumpiness make...

Had a Nissens rad break, the aux. rad fell apart and I've had to replace a weak thermostat. The PAS pump, belt and bomb have all been replaced, the clutch master cylinder linkage broke and I've removed all the plastic bits under the bonnet so that I have access to everything, makes life soooo much easier. Other than that I can't really think of much more that has broken over the years but then again I've pretty much replaced everytihng regardless of condition

Just fitted my new DS2500 rear pads and Brembo discs. Rear pads were £50 from balance motorsport and should take teh punishment, not that the puny rears do very much Brembos were from GSF at £16 each or so. So that's now DS2500s all round

Braided hoses and Super dot 4 to be fitted at a later date.

@Andy - this write up is testimony to both you and the car... I remember you almost gave up with the dreaded boost leaks of many years ago, but you toughed it out and went from strength to strength.

I love the fact you've done so much of this instead of the all-too-often stories of S-car owners who spend thousands in blind faith with big name 'cheque book tuners' and have no understanding of what was done, why and for what benefit or trade-off on something else.

Been analysing your boost numbers again and think I have some special sauce for you to try and break that 300bhp by making that RS2 IC earn its keep. I for one always said that a K24 couldn't do it, but you've got so damn close I have to help with that last push on the rollers No promises here, but it won't be lack of trying.

Cheers Paul, I realised that I had loads of individual threads and had contributed to others' threads but never actually put down the whole story of my little car for those who don't think that 400bhp is a little underpowered

I'll look forward to getting the Milltek DP & cat, 7A inlet cam and a new chips in there, the k24 will make RS2 power! and lots more mid-range. Planning a bottom end rebuild at the end of the year to make everything nice and strong, balanced and light to improve revs, low gear acceleration and smoothnes

The car is being built to take a 3071 so everything has been done with this in mind but I also get the benefits for now and the Homefries really does seem to work well so thanks for your part in this.

Andy, thanks for the reply, great thread. Gives us all a false sense of security that it is AOK, as there are other nutters out there spending a load of money on old, heavy, thirsty cars.

At least diesel prices are increasing faster than petrol prices for a change. Anyway as others have said, for me it's smiles per mile rather than mpg and also the buzz from the upgrades or just getting it working as it should again.

Continued good fortune with your own car.

                            Kind regards.

An oil leak from which missing air con bolt? I've removed my compressor this week and I'm waiting for some parts before I refit my shiny new radiator (I found my water leak ) so once that's in tomorrow I'll be firing her up and taking the new brakes for a good test. I'd rather not have oil going everywhere if one of the mounting bolts plugs some hole somewhere! I don't see how though!

Its the bolt that goes thru the block for the mounting bracket afaik. You should notice quite soon if there is a problem.

@andy - nice picture above, where was that taken?
