need some advice on parts for tough roads

hi everyone, i need some advice on parts i need to change or upgrade for the S2,

i m building an S2 for future classic rally, but first for a long trip and i wanna know which parts i should change to wistand long travel in tough roads.

I want the strongest dampers available ( De carbon ?? ) and heavy springs ( are there any ?? i would like to upgrade the air filter but don t know how.

I need also an aluminum guard for the sump, mudflaps, ...

i try to find something on the net on rally S2 projecs, so if u got some ideas, all are welcome.

I ll post pics as soon as the weather gets clean ! LOL ! apparently this saturday

New leather in place, it makes feel the S2 as a new car !!

For tough roads is it better also to get steel wheels compare to alloy ones ( aluminium brakes, steel bend)

    Thanks !!!!!!!!!

      Some ideas and comments: -

You would be amazed at just how think the sump guard needs to be in order to withstand hitting an embedded rock. Normally the are only capable of deflecting lose debis. Therefore I would strongly recommend raising the ride height. Remember to fit a gearbox guard as well as a sump guard.

I would consider seam welding the subframes and the wishbones for extra strength

Unless you need the RAM air effect for max power, I would consider revising the whole air intake system. To start with, I would raise the air intake (not necessarily a full snorkel but maybe have it enter through bonnet mounted grills) and not have it pointing forwards. Next I would use a wire mesh in the inlet to filter out the debris before it reaches the filter.

Your oil cooler and intercooler are very vunerable and probably both need moving. I would move the oil cooler in front of the main rad and change the intercooler mounts to something like S2-Bo uses to raise the IC up to the top of the bumper. Then I would fit a standard Coupe bumper as they are higher (no chin spiler), remove the number plate and cut a large hole for the IM, which I would cover in strong mesh. The number plate can either fit to one sit (Alfa style) or below the IM intake.

At the back, I would remove the tank and fit a fuel cell. I would also brace between the rear turrets and strengthen the front turrets and brace bar.

      Cheers n

Thanks for all those advices, any ideas where i can find parts ?? guard for sump and gearbox, do i have to make one or can i buy one somewhere ?

oh, and what about tyres, i saw rally tyres but their quite expensive 200£ a piece, what about using winter tyres for gravel ? only thing i need quite strong sidewall.

I ll also put a roofrack, how much weight can i put on the roof ? ( i know the minimum the better, but would like to get an idea ?)

        Thanks

I was standing barefoot on the edge of my roof the other day to get something off the rafters in my garage, so they can take 70kg a side I know that

There is some heavy duty compenents listed on the parts system for the Audi 80 and Coupe - pretty sure that would increase the ride height- at the compromise of reduced handling - but on rough terrain of course that is almost irrelevant. HPmuirt's advice makes a lot of sense... I suspect you will have to get sump, gearbox and rear diff guards made up specially - worth ringing round some rally preparation companies - they might surprise without costing huge sums of money.

The other thing to invest in is a very good seat - the hard core rough terrain boys have suspension in their seats to avoid back problems on long stages... Gets expensive already.

Seam welding everywhere you can, and fitting a good multipoint roll cage makes a HUGE difference to the chassis strength and rigidity.

Talk to a tyre place that specialises in motorsport applications - you shouldn't have to spend huges sums of money on all terrain tyres unless they are also rated for high speeds. I'm not sure that steel wheels are the answer unless its really rough terrain at low speeds - lighter wheels reduce unsprung weight and make it easier for suspension to work on continuously bumpy terrain.

Ride height is your main concern here - I sometimes have to take my S2 down a 1km farm lane - it is incredibly slow and uncomfortable in the S2 and I have to position the car carefully at certain points to avoid the exhaust grounding on ridges. When I go down the same lane in our allroad - its like two times the speed and three times the comfort with the utmost ease. Get a look under an allroad if you can - its interesting to see where they have added underbody protection for those situations.
