whats the easiest and safest way to tune my standard S2?

I've just got a 92 model S2 and I'm already after more power! I've read about people getting remaps and chips coming out with 100 bhp more than what they had? is this honestly possible? if it is what do I need and where do I get it? cheers, Rob
p.s are these engines the same as what were used in the S1?

Your S2 will be a 3b. As for 100bhp remaps etc, not really. Be very careful - if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!

It depends on what you want, what you expect and what you have to spend, but i would suggest getting a homefry remap from s2central.net if you havn't already. Youll be looking at around 30-40bhp gain, more torque and a lot smoother setup.

Add an exhaust, bigger airbox (RS2 or drilled ABY), samco boost and coolant hoses to help with those niggling boost leakes and youve got yourself another quality S2

Just make sure you've paid a though to suspension and brakes before going mad with power!

It's impossible to gain 100bhp with a chip, unless you car was already chipped and they made a dog's dinner of it. There are a large number of reputable chips, both tuner and home-built, and you will see a good power gain on one. Search for "homefries" on the forum for info on home-made chips.

Around a 50bhp gain is available to you by chipping alone (i.e. 220 going to 275bhp) assuming that your car is well maintained and does not have any boost leaks.

However, before you search for homefries, please do the following: -

        1. Pull any error codes from the ECU (using VAGCOM or following instructions on www.S2Central.net)
        2. Do a boost leak test and fit a boost gauge
        3. Upgrade the brakes !!!
        4. Renew the suspension bushes and top mounts
        5. Fit stiffer anti-roll bars to reduce understeer
(if you like harder rides then koni or even bilstein dampers will make a big improvement)

THEN think about power upgrade options: -

        1. +50bhp (homefries or MRC remap)
        2. +75bhp (RS2 airbox, bigger exhaust, decat, homefries+ or MRC remap)
        3. +100bhp (RS2 hardware = RS2 turbo/EM/exhaust/airbox/injectors/shells/fuel rail etc)
        4. +150bhp (as above with a remap)

This list will keep going (there are 500 and 600+ BHP cars on here on stock pistons etc, but the torque increase is going to be take you past the safe limits of your stock rods. So if aiming for over 400bhp then you should change the rods to allow bigger turbos to spool quickly, otherwise the remapping will have to be conservative to hold the turbo back. Rod limit is around 600Nm.

The other think to consider with big power upgrades is that you do not have the strongest gearbox

        Cheers n

There is no easier/cheaper/safer way to get more power than a homefry. Bang for buck is probably the best value too!
Before having any bigger ideas get it done and enjoy it, it will transform the car no end

Remember it's a 3B no homefry for it at the moment but in the works I believe

MRC do generic chips for £250, that gives the 3b plenty of poke , more then any other chips iirc

My 3B setup is nearly there... Same price and spec as MRC. Difference is I do the hands-on work including the necessary MAP sensor upgrade to run them. For a bit more I can do switchable multimap as well on the 3B.
