Sorry for all the qs but v8 engines and 80qs are fairly cheap and my dad thinks it would make a nice car for him to potter about in and would tow a horsebox as well. Mechanicaly the swap seems ok, minus auto flywheel issues, just dont know how to sort the ecu immobiliser, I believe a8 ones integrated with the dash.
Will be a nice car, wanted to put the v8 in my 90 when my dad took his a8 off the road, however the 90 was totalled before that got any further.
Paul all the v8 swaps I have seen on motorgeek into b3 5 pot cars have used custom engine mounts.
034 do mounts and a flex plate to allow the use of a manual box with the auto flywheel, ie engine from a8.
Oh maybe its the V6 mounts that work nicely with the V8 donkeys... I've seen a few conversion threads on US sites before - a 40V 4.2l V8 would be fantastic fun in an old 80Q alright - but its not for me at the moment.
other issues are: oil filter doesn't fit as its too long/fat, metal water pipes on back of engine foul on tie rods, Chassis rails interfere with exhaust manifolds, subframe has to be altered so it doesn't foul on sump and its fly by wire so got to mount throttle pedal
The engine is from a 2001 S6 running std management so kept clocks, key etc to keep immobiliser happy
URQ 20vt converted
80 quattro saloon with on going a V8 transplant
I am (very slowly!) doing this conversion on a CQ with a 32V V8, which externally at least is virtually identical to the 40V.
The engine mounts are very different, the A8 mounts onto the front subframe whereas the CQ engine mounts are on the inner wings and much higher, the 034 mounts (I think) mean you have to relocate the oil filter, I have gone for compact chevy transmission mounts (have to admit to copying wabtheking on the this one!).
I am going for a GEMS ECU, custom manifold and individual throttle bodies, this should be approaching 400bhp when you consider an S8 is 340bhp and thats heavily catalysed with a restrictive inlet and a conservative tune and running huge ancillaries to support all the electrics etc.
Here is the engine in situ:
I did originally intend to do this but decided against it as I want the car to look reasonably standard( this would cause a huge bulge in bonnet), plus I don't fancy rebuilding gearboxes and bottom ends every 5 minutes...........
That would be interesting... I have an old mate in Boston restoring a 67 Camaro and he recently decided to go for a shiny new LS3 engine in a crate direct from factory cos he can't be bovvered with carbs and stuff (dont blame him) - would be a good way to wind him up if he fancies a quattro conversion on that thing
