    Sports shed 10VT, it begins.

As some of you know I'm planning a budget 10VT Saloon project, spent today extracting my power plant from it's happy residence in a 1990 100 Avant. Took me a lot longer than expected, mainly due to the waste gate/down pipe bolts and the oil cooler hose to block connections were a complete sod. I also spent a fair bit of time photographing all electrical connections ect.

Got to find the right Saloon now, I have some leads on a couple of potential candidates but it could be be anything, a T81/85 or even T89 flavour as yet, quattro is imperative!!!! Cost will be a major factor in my final decision, I want to use as much of my budget as as possible on brakes, suspension and converting the engine to EFi using a VEMS ECU. The search will start in earnest at the end of February, I get paid for a big job and I'll have finally finished my S2 project by then, which MUST take priority for the next month. Part of the reason for this venture is to prevent myself from going mental with the S2 which will be live mapped by MRC to make the most out of my current B'stardised Nothelle/ RS2+ set up then left alone.

    Anyway engine removal, done.

Good luck with your project. Swapping a 10v turbo into a typ85 make for a good time. While not as powerful as a 20vt it still surprises most who think it's just an old Audi. Looking forward to following along.

I'm going to be using a VEMS ECU supplied by Peter Nanassy from Hungary (off the forum), he's an extremely knowledgeable guy and very helpful, also speaks near perfect English enabling decent communication regarding technical support which he is more than happy to help with. The main advantage is completely doing away with the over complex, highly restrictive and generally poo CIS K-jet system.

I'm going to make my own wiring harness using parts supplied by Peter, this save a lot of cash. I also have a lot of the other components required knocking round, left over from my S2 project as it happens. Should make my MC2 motor safely capable of about 250/280BHP which is the upper limit of my old S2 3B injectors combined with the standard turbo. Funnily enough the K-jet fuel pump is more than adequate for this set up as K-jet runs at high pressure, ie 5 bar+. The 3B injectors need a little over 3 bar which will be controlled by an either my old 3B FPR or an RS2 FPR which may mean crappy economy but serious torque and little lag with the smallish K24 turbo.

Peter reckons the MC bottom end is good for 350 BHP, so all being well I'll have a nice safe set up. I will be removing the sump and checking all the shells, along with oil pump back-lash, I'm only going to replace components if necessary, budget project remember.

In preparation I'm rebuilding and gas flowing the head myself along with matching the manifolds ect, it will be lightly skimmed by a local engineering company who will also install new exhaust valve guides/valves if necessary along with re-cutting the valve seats to suit for an amazing price. I will do all the final reassembly like grinding the valves in, changing the stem seals ect along with some port work.

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses, there are still some good cheap type 85 saloons out there and I may know of one if the guy will sell it.

Sounds like you have fun with that stupid waste gate support bracket that bolts on the gearbox bellhousing and stops you separating the engine and box?

Yeah this should be a fun project, progress will be a little steady as I want get my S2 on the road ASAP, I also have a bit of work on my 10V FWD daily driver to get out the way as well.

I'd be interested to know about the car you mention. PM me with details

Angle grinder is the tool of choice!

All the down pipe bolts very seized up and the highly corroded waste-gate flexi to down pipe bolts were like a Krypton factor challenge. I'd run out of grinding discs so managed to come up with solutions using various extension bars with UJ's and hammering on 11mm sockets combined with swearing a lot.

I carefully removed the complete wiring loom today I don't need most of it but thought it best to air on the side of caution and take the lot out.

                My work Bench resembles Beirut.

I'm going to keep the Avants 15" X 6.5" wheels and fit them with proper snow tyres to run on my S2 when it snows, I will obviously have to use them them in combination with standards brakes.

Yeah, my hands and fore arms bare witness to my struggles, much spanner rash.

The loom looks a bit scary just slung on top of the gearbox, however I only need the engine loom and ECU connection both of which area easily separable. I systematically photographed every step of removal, beats labelling any day.

                            Ahhh! Single malt....Believe me.....I understand.

If I was closer I'd volunteer a hand. I used a WX motor thinking it would be on the cheap and a piece of cake right. Well it took me a year and a half in the end. You'll be rewarded for those late nights putting things together. My car is still my favorite to drive....wife's favorite too oddly enough.

The RS2 is STILL at that slow paint shop. I've backed off. I haven't checked on it since they told me it would be finished at the end of February. Knowing it is about two weeks worth of work I will be paying them a visit on the February 15th. If they have not started it's coming come with me.

If you need anything let me know.

I've found my candidate. Deposit paid and I pick her up next week. It needs sills but otherwise the body sounds pretty good, the lacquer is also really badly pealing on the roof. But the deal was a fair one for both parties.

Big thanks too SteveT63 off classicaudi for the heads up and thanks also to Ben (Shark90) for being good enough to part with it.

Can't wait to pick her up, better photos of what I'm contending with to follow next week.
