A new stock clutch should be ok for what you are after IMO, my original clutch lasted for 180k miles and another 20k miles of RS2 spec before it started to slip. (and it got used properly everyday if u know what i mean :mischeif

That's quite reassuring. 180 K on a standard clutch is good going, to then subject it to 300BHP for 20K and it hold out is testament to Audi's build quality and propensity to over engineer vehicle's of this period.

It was running 340hp, and it only slipped on big launches, ie. dropping the clutch at 5k rpm

Really. Then a new standard clutch 'should' be able to handle 380ish BHP, all be it for a shorter life span. Though I suppose it's torque that stresses the clutch as opposed to outright power.

Maybe I'll try RS2 spec, a rather influential opinion says it's the way forward... worst that can happen is I have to use stockish chips instead of higher boost items.

this is the problem, I go round and round in circles thinking everything through and end up back at a CT350, rebuilt engine, new clutch etc.

why dont you find yourself a cheap/used HX35 instead? may cost half, maybe 1/3 of the money for the CT350 and with 250$ for a hotside +100GBP for a full service, you may have yourself a nice turbo, spooling roughly the same as a GT3071 and giving you hp possibly as big as a CT355.

HX35s have been known to spool from 3400rpm on 2.0lit mitsubishi engines.I bet they can do better on the 2.2l.

Too much needs uprating to do anything like that. I use my cars hard and if something could break then it more than likely would

boost limit is your friend there. If you are going to have the car mapped for the fueling, then you can decide where and when the boost will come on.
It is just a good budget choise

Yeah, thanks for the heads up, I'll have a look at them for sure.

The thing with RS2 is that I'd more than likely go for a bigger turbo and knock it back a little so that when I can get the bottom end and clutch done, it's a matter of a remap and 400+ ponies, I'm sure that would suffice with the car in its lightweight state

Just having a think about alternatives to this 'half-way house' projekt, rather than chase more power, perhaps it's worth finishing off the car so it can take something proper later on. This was originally my plan but the temptation to go for more oomph is too much sometimes

                      This would involve:-
                      • Uprated rods
                      • New bearings, rings, bolts and gaskets
                      • Basic balance
                      • Flywheel lightened to 7-8kg
                      • Sachs clutch

Total cost is the about the same and on paper I'm getting very little 'improvement' for the money, however, it means that when I do go for a turbo it can be a properly sized one

Interesting choice here really, sensible option is the bottom end rebuild I think but then sometimes being sensible is boring...

This is precisely what i'm doing with my engine convertion Andy - rebuild and uprate the engine before it goes in, then run with standard S2 gear until fund allow bolt on goodies for more ponies

But going from my tired 7A to circa 300ps with my 3B / ABY hybrid engine will be a nice leap in performance for me - you'd have to spunk loads of cash and not really get anything to start with

If you do a lot of the engine rebuild work yourself I worked out I'm looking roughly at £2500 to do it properly inc uprated clutch assuming I can get away with a rehone & reuse standard pistons which is likely as rebuilding a very healthy engine

Yeah, the clutch and rods are my main concern as I like things to be safe and enjoy a good launch or two every now and again Places like the back straight at the 'ring isn't so forgiving on bottom end weaknesses...

Keeping things reasonably sensible was the inspiration for this thread. Wait and see where I get to...

Andy when are you thinking of doing this ,im going for a bigger hybrid so my MTM K26 HYBRID will be available along with RS2 injectors £550 FOR both maybe, straight fit
and the differance is fantastic compared to chipped K24,i will say that the power has moved up the revs and it doesnt respond like the k24 but when you hit 3k with plenty of throttle it makes you laugh till 6krpm .Its still nice and drivable but lots more punch
and best vfm i thinkor try QST £5k:mischeif:

It's a hard choice isn't it!! I've thought about what my next moves with the car will be, I want to do this half-way thing and have a solid 330-350 on a stock bottom end. But I can't keep thinking, if I need to then get RS2 EM and injectors, why not just get the turbo to go with it and use Paul's hi-boost fries. And that will of course, lead to the 'why not do rods and get the turbo later when it can be pushed'... at which point i realise that'll take me years and £££ so i should just go back the hybrid + custom map!

I'd go down the "we need Paul to get a hybrid homefry" but it seems they are all different so that isn't really viable. So I'm still stuck between getting a hybrid and custom map vs. just getting an RS2 and homefry.
