a crummy day can always pull a 180 when a box arrives

        started putting everything back together:

the turbo is shipping out to G Pop Shop today...here's the 'before':

very excited to see it rebuilt...

and the engine is ready for the shop:

when all of this comes back, the head will have new guides and seals, the block will be bored out .5mm and the crank should be polished and balanced...

You don't waste much time, do you?
Keep at it, will be very interesting to see that engine in your car, although in time perhaps a coupe quattro shell could be a better idea... then again, it'd be so boring being like everyone else is.

              Nice project

I don't think an S4/6 rear suspension/running gear will bolt straight up. B5 quattro rear end is identical though. Subframe, ARBs, Dual wishbones etc. Not too sure the diff is the same, it may well be. Should be easy enough to pick up of a front damaged car.

Remember this engine will be heavier so handling will be different, maybe not bad, just not the same as it is right now.

Also, the AAN inlet mani is different to the S2 one, so the problem there is fitting a radiator. I has been done before of course, but its good to know beforehand that the S2 or 7A main rad is not likely to fit easily. (the rad is beside the engine on a 5 pot 80)

Re. your 4th bolt, you want a half moon or S spanner, they are a pig to get to! Link or Link

              Good luck with the project

yeah the quattro is going to have to wait until next year - I won't have enough time to get it done AND test it before the competition especially with how busy shops are getting now that the season's started...a B5 rear end will be very easy to source out so I think once I`m back from the race I will just drop the car off for the winter and let them get it done properly...

on the intake - yup noticed that already....I`ll likely use a custom rad or just move the current one forward....there's A LOT of space up front without the AC so with a little bit of trimming I think I can squeeze it forward...if not i`ll go custom...

a lot of people are worried about the extra weight up front and keep forgetting the extra weight from the cage....in the end it will be up to testing to figure out the best setup....

oh and after a long discussion with the Targa gods I've decided I will not be swapping to 5x112 this season as there's no need for upgraded brakes...the only stage that needs brakes is 12km long and is at the end of the day...so if I cook the brakes its no big deal....

You can upgrade the brakes now to the porsche calipers and RS2 carriers using ford Focus RS disks which are 4x108mm, then just a disk swap if you goto 5x112

Its not so much extra weight, but much further forward too

There is NO room at the front of the engine for a rad, remember you will need a IC down there! S2s have a main rad off to the side, and a small aux one above the IC and X member. A custom side one would be your best bet

I have never used a 2871 but from what I hear they are not the best, an RS2 one is better as an alternative. I have got an S2 with a 3071 which is nice, you can use your OE EM with it too, but its a fair restriction. The Wagner or 2nd hand RS2 EM is your best bet. If you are worried a 3071 is too much, remember it wont be too much when you have quattro Having said that, the RS2 turbo is a torque monster so may be more drivable for what you want. As Jamo says though, Paul (S2Central on here) has done 2871 mapping recently so could hook you up if you go that way, or RS2 maps are available from him too

B5 stuff is bolt on so thats a massive boost for you WRT quattro, however, where is your (gas) tank? You may need a different one. Just something to consider

                  Hope some of this helps

man that's very usefull info...much appreciated...

k one by one...RS2 anything is basically not available over here (034 might have some stuff but its worth its weight in gold)...Porsche calipers I can get ahold off relatively easy and perhaps I can make my own carrier brackets...i`ll have to look into that...

Ford Focus RS - not available over here - NA gets the cheap plasticy crappy version...

I'll have to play the rad by ear - we`ll see what happens...

Turbo is staying stock - I got a sick deal from 034 on their Stage 1 stock chip - it should put me in the 300hp range with my stock turbo...I am also getting an extra stock turbo and rebuilding the one I already have...when the car becomes quattro I`ll figure everything else out...I have a strong feeling I`ll be taking my B5 with a built TDi to Targa next year but we`ll have to wait and see...

once again - really appreciate the info...

                      No worries

Don't forget that this place is a very helpful/kind place, there are many people here who would send you stuff over no worries at all.

I would be surprised if the stock turbo gets 300hp, generally 280 is accepted as the top end, but still, its a good turbo especially for a FWD car. I am not sure if Launch control would be beneficial to you, but PRJ and S2Central are now offering adjustable launch control for motronic From reading their threads, it should produce around a bar of extra boost at 5krpm over holding 5k on the throttle (-0.3 to +0.7).

An ABY IC and XM can be had for very little over here, and would be ample for your 300hp, I may have one for sale soon but many folk here would be happy to send you stuff over the pond.

Paul - S2Central - can sort you out with ABY/ADU silicone boost and water hoses, he is putting in an order right now if you need, I am not sure how much use that would be though, or my IC thinking about it as you have the AAN Inlet manifold!

Sorry to disappoint, but it makes nowhere close to that.
Not on a mustang dyno anyway.

keep in mind I don't have the rear drive line...in any case it will be fun to drive...

hmm...I guess with the sweet amounts of recent progress something was bound to slow me down...

just got a call from the machine shop saying: "Your head is ****...it's cracked at like 20 places..."

not sure exactly what that means so I'm heading over there on monday to check it out...in the meantime - what heads can I use with this bottom end? can I use a eurovan head as I have one handy...?

I think only AAN/ADU/3B/ABY are direct fit and 7A but it needs machining of the water manifold and valves and springs etc swapped over.

and the 3b and 7a need the CPS provisions milled and welded=$$$
