I think it's time I started a project thread on my 'new' car - I've had it over 4 months now. It's become my daily driver since I fitted winter boots in december, and soon to be returned to 'family cruiser & weekend car' status.
It's the first RS2 I'd ever ridden in, and inspiration for my "Project 400". So it was really the only worthy replacement for the S2 Avant I tried to emulate it with. It is mostly stock with 7A cams, MD147 turbo, Koni shocks, and various other tweaks here and there.
My aim is to restore the car to it's former glory; not 'concourse' but to a tidy example. It's former keeper was meticulous - it comes with two folders full of receipts over 12 years, but daily-driver life in London and 158k has taken a toll and I intend on refreshing various aspects of the car as time and funds allow. In the past 5 years it's had many parts replaced - all boost and cooland hoses (with samcos), complete suspension, brakes with big-reds, gearbox and diff oil, POS and coilpacks, radiator and cambelt recently too. Here's a list I wrote when I first bought it;
Immediate:
Oil service (flush, oil + filter)
recon or new plug+seal for PAS pump
Fix heater (replace resistor pack)
Re-run power to boost gauge
HID install and K-pin mod
N/S Indicator swap
Linkage and shifter refresh/replace
Heated seat loom and switches
Stock airbox and performance filter
2011:
Fit A/C compressor and pipework
A/C re-gas
head rebuild
replacement clutch
stock cams + turbo
Long-term:
wheel refurbish
leather refurbish
lower respray
sports cat + downpipe
Fog light replacement
Bumper grill and bonnet grill
Upgrade to monoblock's
After 4 months of driving, I'm pleased to announce apart from the airbox none of them have been sorted
That said, I did have various issues to sort out for an imminent MOT when I bought it that aren't on the list. And I've cleaned it twice; once with a wax after!
The list is still reflective of what I'd like to achieve; most of the 'immediate' jobs are small and will be done fairly quickly but I do need to put priority my tappety-when-cold cyl #5 and the PAS pump that screams like a banshee. Also, it is decatted and I need to sort that before the next MOT in the autumn.
It makes sense to consider any change to the cams and turbo when the head is off for a rebuild, so my first big dilemma is 'what to do when the head is off'... check bore at this mileage i think is a must, but I'm also considering replacement tappets, valve guides and stem seals, mild port/polish, and refit RS2 cams and stock turbo (I want similar power - 375hp/400ftlb - but less lag, quicker spool, better off-boost, but stick with KKK turbo, not much to ask for really!)
I'll update this thread as I make progress and ask questions
