project audi 90 v8 wide body

I'm sick of driving a boring old 90. Last week I started on a boxflare set for the car. Some people will not agree with it since it's a little over sized, but I love the way it's looking. Well Thursday on my way home from work my timing belt on the 7A that I just rebuilt broke, not sure why yet. The engine was high compression with a .16" (~.41mm) shaved head, the .005" thin shim in the AAN MLS gasket pulled out and the cams were advanced ~7 degrees so I'm not likely to have made it out with any intake valves.

I was looking for more power before the 7A died, so I'm skipping dumping any more into that sad little engine and going V8. I have a ~115k PT in a old v8Q kicking around with a dead trans. That engine is already hopped up with 4 degrees advance on cams. 19lb mustang 5.0L injectors, adjustable FPR, 8.5mm race wires, 4.2L throttle body, and it had an ABT chip on it. I'm going to just megasquirt it and tune it. Hopefully I can hit ~300HP with it.

I know pictures, I'll get them up later. I have a few question first.

    1) I'm working on fabricating the engine mounts is the crank enter-line suppose to be offset to the passenger's side? using a gutted block I have and my spare chassis it lines up visually, but it sits 3" to the passengers side based on subframe mounting points (front).

2)what wiring should i keep if any from the 7A harnees to make the gauges work with minimal harness integration with the ecu? I don't mind running separate sensors for squirt. I just don't want to pull the dash and rewire everything I need minimal down time.

shouldnt be set that much offset, should be about 20mm,< my abz sits bout 20mm off centre (towards the off side chassis leg)

just the wires that run from the ecu to the clocks i think, the aux guages have there own loom, might be better with a set of 4cylinder rev counter in your clocks and a box inbetween to sort the rpm signal out, unless a rev counter from a v8 will fit in the coupe dash pod?

if you want a quick easy way to mount the engine, mount to the subframe like how an A4 engine mounts and use the existing motor mounts.

just fab some mounting plates on your subframe

thanks Wab. The PT doesn't mount to the subframe from the factory like your ABZ does it mounts to the chassis legs like the 5-cylinder, but in different locations for starter and header clearance. Putting it in the b3 chassis with the factory 5 cylinder mounting location means I have to modify the headers, which doesn't bother me since I want 3" dumps to tie into my existing3" exhuast system. I'll build a short y-pipe with 3" 3 bolt chevy Flanges I can get for pennies at work and use those to tie into the dual glass pack 3" exhaust already on my car.

only thing I need to figure out is if the stock starter will work or if I need a new one. I'm using a stock euro v8 6-speed flywheel with stage 3 7A disc and RS2 pressure plate. It should hold everything this little monster can make and more. it's heavy though tipping the scales at 32lbs assembled.

I took the block out and redid some work now it sits ~3/4" to the PS of engine bay, which should be right. laser aligned down crank to trans and rear end. mounts should be pretty straight forward with it. I'm only going to use 2 bolts on the passenger side mount, because header and start clearance make using the 3rd/4th bolt holes almost impossible with my limited tooling. mounts won't be pretty, but nothing in this project is.

so gonna be like a half way kit between an imsa 90 and a UR quat?

will certainly look agressive, this style has been "attempted" before by Vagsport or Siena or whatever name hes under now. honestly didnt look the best but that was on a coupe not a sedan....... longer body will def look better.

                hope it goes well matey

Got my engine out of my V8q today should start mounts on Tuesday. I'd do it tomorrow, but I work all day.

Yes full metal flares, no glass here. It's a winter sled as well so must not be to brittle.

Once I'm done welding the outside together I'm going to re-enforce the inside of the fenders so they don't flex. Ordering the wheels soon. 17 by 10 et +25mm

with 235/45-17 stretch over and 25mm spacers should make for some nice stance. Wheel arches will also be opened up to run the larger t44/newer audi sizes since the smaller 90 size tires are getting hard to find in the US. Plus the larger tires give me a better overall gearing for the v8 to drop the rpm's while cruising.

nice progress with the arches, and will make a change. Out of interest what make are the wheels?

I'm not sure the brand of the wheels. They are mustang saleen replica's. I'll need some spacers to make them clear with the 25+ offset. I'm really thinking they will help fill the flares. Plus with all the extra power the v8 will make over the 7A 205's aren't really going to hold well.

                          More progress

radiator comparison. nice one is for my V8 coupe other is stock v8q

                          out she comes

clutch all ready to go in.

                          flywheel install

                          clutch all ready

V8Q radiator in 90q? Yes, but only by a hair

mounts will hopefully be finished up on Friday and the engine in on Saturday evening. still have the 7A to pull the mounts to build for the engine, the radiator, and oil cooler, then I need to modify the the headers to clear everything.

well mounts are finished for the engine. Work as slowed due to work and the fact it was 110 in the garage on sat with 78% humidity so it felt like 150. the mounts were not made to be pretty or really fancy this is a quick and dirty swap made with what I can get for cheap.

I'm going to be ditching the 3.6L intake and exhaust in favor of the ABZ units. I picked up and ABZ intake a few years ago in a parts exchange and had one ABZ header from a pair of heads I bought. picked up the other and they should alot easier to get plumbed in then the stock units as I had all sorts of clearance issue with the mounts and subframe.

I'm interested to see what I can squeeze out of this little engine I know it isn't going to be the 4.2L power I've been use to from my old 4.2L v8q, but it should be pretty good in the 90.
