Another SWB Quattro project...maybe S1....decision pending

    Hi once again,

since I did not wanted to destroy other project pages with questions I decided to make my own....
The plan is to use the Coupe GT and convert to quattro using B4 floorpan.

The question that rises is what way to use to measure the correct length of the "new" car.

    1. Place it on a car jig or make some sort of frame to manually measure it's length?
    2. Tonks informed me that the S2 drivetrian bolts right on. It is the same as in the B3-B4 V6 Quattro (they seem to be cheaper than the S2 as complete cars).

    Thanks in advance

A useful measurement from the lower corner of the rear window aperture

to the hole in the front bulkhead where the dash bolts thru

    Is 2274mm.

The total length removed from behind the 'B' pillar is 320mm.

Remember if you are making a road version do not cut too much steel from under the rear quarter windows as the panels do not go right up to the window...

I was considering to make some sort of frame like this inside the car but extend it to the rear in order to have the correct length.

Another thought was to make something like this for under the car i.e. at jack points or where the subframe bolts on for the front and rear part.

      These are from Prospeed

The nicest way would be to use a jig that bolts to the subframe mounts this way it is 100% square with ease.

However I would not worry too much as when you measure your cars before you even start to cut you will find that they can be 5-7mm out from one side to the other

why is that? from the factory or does it bend during the years?

Just factory tolerances from this era, I've been quite surprised by the differences when measuring 'straight' cars to get reference points for cutting and welding bent ones. I expect modern cars to be closer as more advanced production procedures come into play.

A friend of mine restored a 1995 Ferrari 355 a few years ago. It was smashed front, rear all of the right side and alot of the left side. We got a used front end and cut the car about 5 inches up the A pillars. BUT that front end was also a bit bashed up we found out, so he got hold of the factory tolerances for the front suspension turrets.... We where both very surprised to find out that Ferrari were pleased if there were no more than 7mm difference in height between them! We settled for 0mm.

Yah Old stuff has a very large window of good enough. Modern cars are a little better depending on manufacturer. The USA Big 3 (Ford, GM, Chrysler) have the if it's +/- 10mm it's ok. Talking to the body guys I work with the Germans have the tightest tolerances. +/- 1mm on the frame rack.

I have another Question regarding Quattro and tranaxles:

                  1. The Coupe Quattro with the 2226 10V NA engine has the same gearbox as the turbo ones?
                  2. Does the 20V turbo ABY/ADU bolt on as is?
                  3. What power can this NA gearbox/diffs handle?

                    1) The ratios are different (lower) in the KV engined 016 gearbox.
                    2) Yes
                    3) A lot, 300 easily, and some folk have run 500.

Thanks for the reply. I am thinking the shorter ratios would be great for big turbo, low weight for sprint/hillclimb slyle of driving.

I wanted something similar with the gearing, I wanted minimal lag and quick boost buildup, so kept the kkk24k with the AAN, bigger intercooler and a remap...

It pulls very well, it has to be said.

That 2 dor 80 would be nice as it is,only made quattro.
                          It would be something different.

indeed. A quattro widebodied 2 door 80 would be something really special!
