    Project: Nim's S2

Hey guys, here's the start of my project diary for my recently purchased S2...got a feeling this will end up being a LONG one! Lol

Let me start at the beginning...

I originally purchased a pearl white 2.3 10v cabriolet back in September 2010 and have spent the last 15 months servicing it, making sure everything worked, restoring it to original and adding a few cheeky S2 upgrades My long term plan was to do an engine conversion to a 2.2 turbo S2 engine and eventually Quattro it.

But just before Christmas Quattro Dan's pearl white S2 came up for sale at a bargain price so had to snap it up (saves a lot of time and money upgrading the cabriolet).

Set off in the cabriolet with Tonks4x4 on the 22nd December to pick it up but 10 minutes up the M1 the cabriolet decided to break down and spill the contents of the radiator all over the floor :'( So while I waited for the AA, Ash England picked Bri up and took him to fetch the S2 from Sheffield.

The next day we replaced the radiator at Tonks4x4 and also identified that the water pump is on its way out, which caused the previous nights breakdown.

I have decided not to risk driving the cabriolet in case the water pump goes and causes damage. When I'm ready to sell the cabriolet I will price it accordingly or if the buyer prefers I can get the water pump sorted and add it on to the purchase price.

The S2 had lacquer peel on the bonnet, the heater matrix had gone, the drivers side rear calliper was seized and the ECU wasn't working. Also I knew the process of servicing, restoring and repairing was about to start again...along with the additional options I now had available to me with the S2

Once i got it on my drive I started by making a list of all jobs that need doing to the S2 and also jobs that need doing to the cabriolet to get it ready for sale (replacing S2 parts with the original parts etc).

    tbc...

Good collection. Fix the cabby and use it whilst you get some of the bits done on the S2 so you dont have to rush it so you can get to and from work.

Ideally that's what I'd like to do but I've got to sell the cabby soon as the money from that has to pay off the money I borrowed to buy the S2. And I'd rather spend money sorting the S2 out than on a car I'm selling if I can.
Luckily I'm getting a lift to work and back while I sort the cars out so have been able to do things properly

I've got a bit of writing to do to bring this project diary up to date but should hopefully get it done by weekend

The S2 is nearly ready for MOT Hopefully be on the road this time next week!

The cabby is nearly ready to go, just need some original (black face) centre console gauges to replace the ones with plasma dials I have transferred over to the S2.

I will upload photos and details of the cabriolet hopefully next week, would be nice to sell it to someone who'd appreciate it.

The first jobs I did was to replace the original S2 strut brace with one I'd previously purchased from Tonks4x4 and had painted red. The wing mirrors were scratched on the back so I swapped them with the ones on the cabriolet.

After this I swapped the bonnet of the S2 with the one from the cabby with the help of a friend. The washer jet tubing has become brittle over the years so will have to replace a short length that disintegrated during the transfer The grill on the S2 bonnet looked slightly better than the one on the cabby so I swapped that too. S2 looking much better already

Next on the list was to replace the offside rear calliper as it had seized. Luckily Bri at Tonks4x4 had one in stock so cleaned it up, sprayed it black and got it on the car...handbrake now operational.

The orange indicators on the S2 are also replaced with the clear ones from the cabriolet.

The seatbelt socket on the passenger seat was broken so fixed that and then started stripping the cabby.

I removed the S2 callipers, steering wheel, clocks, gauges, wiper stalk & loom I had fitted and replaced with the original cabriolet ones. I still need to find another set of original gauges to refit as I installed plasma dials on the original ones.

The S2 callipers I removed from the cabriolet have already been cleaned up and painted red so I have put them on the S2.

              ...nearly up to date!

Good stuff! Nice to see you have started a thread....

What you don't want to do is keep track of how much it is costing you over the future years. Just drive it and enjoy it and fix it up as you go...

Spink also has a 3B ECU for sale to replace the one on loan.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you for the MOT next week. It should go through...

                    Cheers guys

And thanks for all your help with it so far Bri...and for the many more years of work I'm sure you'll be doing on it lol

Probably is a good idea not to keep track of what I spend on it...it's scary just thinking about how much I could spend! I will definitely enjoy driving it and making it into the best S2 I can!

Fingers, toes and everything else crossed it will be taxed, insured and mot'd by Wednesday

As previously mentioned, the heater matrix had gone on the S2. Quattro Dan sent me a second hand replacement but I decided to install a new one instead as I do not want to be having to replace this again! Lol. So I now have a second hand heater matrix for sale if anyone is interested?

I had the S2 booked in with Bri @ Tonks4x4 to replace the heater matrix last Wednesday. Now, Tonks will be able to tell more about what was encountered during the job but to give you an idea...while I was at work Bri rang me to inform me that as he was taking the dash out he found the aftermarket air conditioning unit that someone had installed in the past. This wasn't an Audi A/C unit, it wasn't working and they'd made a right mess of the installation...

I agreed that the whole system should be removed (who needs A/C when you got a sunroof?! Lol)

Shortly after I received a photo of the heater matrix...

...no wonder it wasn't working! :/

I managed to finish work early so went up to see how it was going and get my hands dirty...

                        ...tbc...

Here is a pic of the aircon unit...

Which included, during the installation the control cables had been cut to be replaced by small heater control motors

As you can see the matrix was toast.

Which had caused lots of leakage and very wet carpets...

After a hunt around the cellar. I finally managed to find enough parts to make one complete fully operational heater setup.

Old and new ducting and motor box for comparison

Also during the install they have cut 2 large holes through the bulkhead blanking panel of which only one had a grommet.

However a 10 hour stint and lots of tea and an hour to look after my screaming baby daughter managed to get the full aircon removed. The matrix and heater box replaced, plasma dials installed and a heated seat loom wired in ready for new seats.
