    Project "Big Blue"

    Hi all,

Just thought I’d post some stuff on my S6 project. Nothing major or special, but trying to do the whole car on a budget, pretty low key compared to some of the fabrication and skills on this forum. I have the car as something different to drive, doesn't really have much of a purpose apart from sounds nice, goes well and is practical. I might take it to the odd show/event, but never going to be a track weapon. I have a 1972 MG midget with 170bhp for autotesting too.

Bought the car on Ebay last June, just a whim really, car was already in Northern Ireland and was in pretty good order, I had the car remapped (S2central, he lives 2 miles away), made a new 2.5" downpipe and sorted boost leaks etc. Car running well, but just wanted a bit more.

Made a loom up to convert to 1.8T coilpacks (Cheers Diesel Des) I copied his 034 Loom!

Over the last week or so, I started to strip the car down. I have gathered most of the bits up already
    Mods that are planned:
FMIC - Quite small but wanted to keep standard bumper, same size as RS2 cooler, moved the radiator back about 20mm, see photo.
Volvo K24 7400 Turbo with K26 turbine housing
    RS2 Exhaust Manifold
    3" Downpipe and exhaust
    RS2 Injectors

Like I said not chasing mad power but wanted a bit more while still retaining OEM look under the bonnet.

I have the car mostly apart at the minute, I have the FMIC bracket made and intercooler pipes are away getting welded, I just tacked them together with the MIG also did timing belt, waterpump, idler, bottom pulley etc. this weekend. I bought a full gasket set from 034 and engine mounts too. One problem i'm having is the inlet into the Volvo turbo is alot bigget than the standard one (70mm). I was wanting the engine bay to appear stock, the only thing i've found so far is the 034 silcone intake, but it $240!! It wont even look OEM, so might just make up my own in stainless pipe with slcone couplers, or would a RS2 one be any better?

Trying to get it all done before our first kid is due in 6 weeks!!!

    Ivan

Looks good, should be a nice oem plus drive as well.

I just got universal bits to make up the intake for my volvo turbo, the 034 one would be nice, but not at that price. In an S2 a cobra head hose is apparently needed to clear the headlight, you might have more space?

What are you doing for software?

that exhaust wheel on the volvo turbo is too small for the exhaust housing. it wont boost if you leave it like that mate. you can see straight down the side of the exhaust wheel

Also if you do the make your own intake you will want to be able to plum in the diverter valve, or run the internal volvo one.

will20v, hmm, i'm not too sure, i'm just going with the same setup as the other few volvo turbo setups i've seen, maybe I have the wrong turbine housing?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Have you read the volvo turbo thread?

                I beleive mine came from a 944 220bhp turbo

Pictures and part numbers from this page

The normal audi k26 has a 56mm exdu, you can check, or get a seller to check easily.

                  Not quite!
Basically you are going to need a turbine housing with the correct dimensions to suit the Volvo turbine. The earlier K26/6 turbine has the 50mm exit, later ones had a 56mm.
The K24 used on the S6 will be in the 48mm region.
I am not sure whether the K26/6 50mm exit is exactly the right one. If it is then get one! Alternatively, I would think the K24 housing might do the trick if machined out to the correct dimension which you can get from the original Volvo housing.
Easier to obtain a used K24 if you want to keep yours safe!

Its a valid point! There must come a point when economics dictate its not worth being different for difference sake. However it would be a boring world if we all did the same.

Yeah, RS2 was an option, but they seem to get good results on the Volvo setup, with less lag than the RS2 unit, just a setback, but once I locate a new housing all should be fine again.

K24-7400 is 10 years newer technology, and the power difference is small.
However, the lag difference is two different worlds.

It's more comparable to a modern GT turbo, than the old RS2 turbo.

Nice car indeed. I would go for a quick swap and take a RS2 turbo with uprated RS2 injectors and ECU mapping. That will give you good fun and still pricing-wise low cost
