Aarons more broken stuff, and 167 mph TRAP SPEED!!!!

every single time i have been out this year i have broken something. shifter. linkage into trans. axle. cv's and rear diff (possibly diff). twin disc clutch. on and on. and i havent really been on car forums as of late. kinda burned out i guess on it all.

soooo, two weeks ago, on my first burnout, i shattered the left rear axle and shot it out the front of the car and down the track. never seen anything like it. as luck would have it, i have Janis' (fasterthenRS2) old axles for backups. so i put that in, and skipped IFO (Import Face Off) so i made CERTAIN i had my car for one of my sponsors car shows, Pacific Waterlands. i ordered another one of the axles that the shaft is part of and it shows up two days before the car show, so i leave the Janis axle in the car but bring the spare "just in case".

my first pass @ PWL, i launch really soft, revs drop to ~3500, and i run 9.41 @ 167 MPH!!!!! car was >46 psi for most of third gear, and peaked 46+ in 4th as well! every gear change spun the tires too!!! but little did i not realize at the time that spare axle was compromised i believe as i turned off the track. tight radius turn, locked rear/center diffs, big low psi sticky tires, pretty sure this is where it let go.

but i did not know the axle was broken, and i called qualifying good and done, and waited until round one of the brackets. no use pushing the car "for practice sake" anyhow. and round one, is where i did this. almost hit the tree, and then went crazy in 2nd and crazier in 3rd. coasted 4th, kinda shaken, to finish the pass. my thought was it was a"fluke" on the launch, so when i lined back up in the groove, i gave her the GO pedal and when 2nd gear spooled it hit 389 kpa and took me SHARPLY LEFT! shifted to 3rd gear where it spooled to 422.x kpa pretty fast and took me all over!!!!! 4th gear, breathe WOOSAHHHHH, putter on in.

and this was what i discovered when i got under the car to investigate what could have don that.

me and the two guys helping me, we busted our asses to swap out the axle, and just made it with about 15 minutes to spare to make another pass. where i ran 9.49 again leaving soft and bogging a little , for 163 MPH!!!! car is hauling major BOOTY up top for sure!!!! so i know the MPH wasnt a fluke.

so, i am torn right now. its in one pc right now. but i am getting the pricing together to put a 4-link and a Ford 8.8" rear end in the car over winter. i dont want to deal with something like this at 160+ MPH for sure.

but i gotta get this thing sorted, as this, although its a decent little workout, is getting old. i do this quite frequently, sometimes IN THE TRAILER AS WELL!!!!

if you look at the front of the car at about 36 seconds in on the first film you can see said driveshaft making a break for it!!....

I've been pimping the idea for a while. Basically a Ford 9" dropout with a fabricated IRS housing but not for the stronger R&P. That one is priced for those building CTS-Vs but cheaper options are around. The benefits are a huge number of diffs (spools to torsens), CVs, and axles.

The place I dropped my prop off to have some work done had some shafts on the desk they said were off some kind of high power drag car, but they had no CVs, they had a universal joint on either end, not sue how that works with suspension compression but they sure looked strong. Is that something to consider?

Vipers have that same type setup. i "believe" it is a two pc shaft that is splined, and that gives it the length changing ability. not positive because i dont want to buy one to dissect it (yet).

but my axle builders and i looked at that as an option when we had these made, and they determined there was not enough room.
