Mid engine prototype with S2 mechanics

I am evaluating a project proposal for a hillclimb racing car. It should be AWD, mid-engine, the frame/chassis will be designed and built from scratch, and it should use an Audi S2 engine/gearbox/transmission assembly (with upgrades already defined to increase power output and reduce weight).

Manufacturing brackets/mounts, or any parts of this kind is not a problem, the question resides on which orientation the engine/gearbox is the best, and how to achieve power transmission to the wheels maintaining the quattro capabilities.
Does anyone have any suggestion on how can this be achieved?

Mid engine means that unless you go rear drive, you'll have to get a transfer box and prop shaft to put drive to the front. Mid engined and 4wd gets complicated! Look at the RS200 with its 3 prop shafts

Mounting the engine transverse will give weight distribution problems too...

Which ever way you go, it'll be both a challenge and potentially very

The easiest way will be to buy a crashed R8 and take what you need.

No idea of the mounting face but you could look into a 911 4 wheel drive system.

911 is obviously rear wheel drive so basically the reverse of the quattro system, not mid-engine.

Motorgeek thread on the subject with a lot of thoughts/suggestions.

Using mostly old Quattro parts I think the idea was to mount an 01e behind the engine driving the rear wheels, with chain drive of the rear output onto a long prop up to the front diff.

            Or rob Audi

Djones is talking about 996 & 997 turbos, and that they are 4wd.

Whatever. Still rear engined, not mid-engined.

Perhaps something like a ferguson viscous coupling a la R32?

Or, drive a 016 box from the back of the engine conventionally and modify the porsche torque tube transmission like a 924 .and drive this off the front of the engine via haldex

And significantly better handling than any quattro I have driven... 95% to the rear with a viscous coupling to take 60% to the front when needed. It makes for an outstanding road car but not as good as a quattro torsion in the snow.

Gearing would be wrong but possibly use a transverse box on the back with the normal drive shaft outputs feeding propshafts to front and rear diffs. If seen this being used on homemade rock crawlers and off road buggies.

Or use Skyline GT-R running gear with separate transfer box.
But for the cost of the conversion, I would just buy a Gallardo and stick a couple of blowers on it?
Insane pace, supercar handling with Audi engineering and build quality - untouchable.
