    Should I Get Involved?

Right, here's the thing, my RS2 is now pretty much as good as it'll ever get. I'm not going to tune it any further than it's MRC map and to be honest it's pretty perfect as it is. There's no more jobs to do and it's a nice rounded and well sorted car. The problem with that is I like driving it quickly and having a run with other fast things, but because it's nice I kind of worry about it a little. I won't sit close to other cars and I worry about leaving it anywhere. It's always on my mind how hard these cars are to get nice and how much damage a careless idiot could cause. It's unlikely I'll put it through another winter (I never thought I'd say that!), so I've been wondering about building a mongrel. As much as I like my cars to be mint, I also like what I refer to as a 'Super Shitbox'. I thought about putting together a french hatch like a Renault 5 Prima (with GT Turbo running gear) or a boggo 205 with GTI running gear. A sleeper, just for general A - B and where no one will bother with it if I park it somewhere. Not flashy or anything like that, I can put miles on it and not worry etc.

I've been reading this forum a while now and I'm being drawn into getting involved with a B2 Audi 90 Quattro. It's not something that hasn't been done before, but I've noticed the 20V ADU/ABY motor will go in there. I'm not massively familiar with the running gear of the B2, but from what I've pieced together so far, it's do-able. So I guess the question is am I mad to put it together? I've noticed a few people on here have owned them, can you compare it to the RS2?I know it's quite a lot lighter in weight. I can tune it and modify it till my hearts content. I'd like to hear opinions please. Also, what will fit without major surgery CRB gearbox etc?

The best/worst thing is I've found a 90 Quattro quite local which I think may well be a suitable candidate

Do it man. Shitbox sleepers are awesome. If I had the space, skills, time and money, I would love to do something like that.

My Clio 1600 runaround is nicknamed the *******! Naturally, it's got the factory fit dents and scrapes but then has full 182 cup suspension and some fast road brakes on it... I have no issues parking it places, running down country lanes or narrow city streets.

Only issue with B2s is the lack of parts for them. If that doesn't bother you then go for it, otherwise, look for a car that's readily available and cheap to fix (Clio 172 would be a good shout, if you like hot hatches, as the missus's is a great car).

Do it, although I don't like a 90 quattro being called a shitbox and car one doesn't have to care about as they are rare cars nowadays and I love them.

I think you will start to appreciate a 90 quattro quickly once you get involved.

The B2 I've found is complete, in running order and MOT'd. It's pretty straight, I've had a brief look over it and it's been re-sprayed (original colour). I had a nosey underneath and it's covered in that horrible black wax oil/underseal stuff. I'll have a proper look to see what lurks beneath. I understand A-Pillars and boot floors are a rust problem.

There's a lot of after market support for the UR Quattro, will the running gear bits fit? Into roll bars, springs, dampers etc?

Running gear of the Urq (and S2 coupe) fits the 90 quattro, so no problems in that department with parts availability.

Excellent, does that mean I could fit a KW Variant 3 kit from an S2 Coupe?

I didn't mean to be detrimental to the 90 Quattro, I think it's cool which is why I'm looking to do it. I already know it'll cost more to do than a french hatch, but the quality of the end result will be way, way better

How does it handle, is it well balanced with the Torsen rear diff?

You are in exactly the same place as me except that some fly-by-night idiot (with under 2mm of thread on his snow tyres in a massive snow storm) did the unthinkable and hit the back of my car (claimed it was my fault for stoping too quickly!!!). 4 months later and god knows how many thousand €'s, I would hazard a guess at 14500+, my car will be back in my garage on Friday. I spent a significant amount of time sourcing 2 pairs of 968 coupe front wheels (6x16), boring the centres out, miling some spacers down so I could run 205 55 16 winter tyres. Alas, after I got hit I needed a car so sold my V8 110 Defender Pickup and bought a '99 SWB 3.0TD Land Cruiser (bloody great car BTW), I care about it, don't get me wrong, I look after it and have re undersealed it etc but if someone opens a car door into the side step then good luck to them, if the same guy runs up the back of me in his golf again then he'll end up with a ball and pin tow hitch through his radiator not a €3500 bumper! Not sure I'll be using the RS daily any more!

I agree with you David you have one of the best and properly sorted RS2 I have been in it is a total credit to you mate

I think it would be a good idea for you to do a sleeper if you do it half as well as your RS2 it will be a properly sorted pocket rocket

Like you stated you won't be bothered where you park it and you won't be keeping one eye open in case some numpty backs into it like they did with your RS2

I also think you should buy some shares in the company that make KW Variant 3

keep us all informed and good luck.

Absolutely. I have the V3's fitted to my 90 B2 quattro.

As said the B2 90's are a rare and really understated car. One you've fitted a 20vt you without doubt will fall in love with it at the first press of the accelerator.

quattro-nicks build thread is a very interesting read and a special car.

Plenty of info on here with regards 20vt conversions and the Classic Audi forum.

Best of luck and don't hesitate to buy that 90. As it will soon be snapped up..

I'm not sure what to expect from it, I'm curious to know how it drives (with the 20vt engine obviously) compared to something like my RS2, especially as it's getting on for 400kgs lighter.

I've got first refusal on this one that I've seen, I'm away at Spa Classic with a friend racing from tomorrow, but wil be going to see the car early next week.
