    standard valve spring retainers

Hello all. I am looking to see if anyone would happen to have a set of 20 valve spring retainers i could buy off them please?

I got a spare head last year and found to my surprise it had aluminium retainer in it. I had mixed emotions about these - surprise as unexpected bonus but then thought about; 'can aluminium really be durable enough for this job?'. Having said that, it had been on a running engine that was apparently in good order...

Without knowing what brand and therefore what grade aluminium, I don't fancy risking leaving them in the head that i am putting back on a freshly built engine. a cracked retainer is going to release valve into the path of upcoming pistons and that would be the end of the engine

The head is a 7A if that makes a difference, could be same parts as 3B but not sure about ABY.

    fingers crossed

Are you certain that the retainers are aluminum & not titanium?

well, i did have that thought and am going to weigh some...

I've got a set of standard ones coming now just to be sure as looking at the ones that came with the head, they seem too silvery in colour to be Titanium. I have read that one test is use a grinder on the metal - Aluminium = no sparks, titanium = white sparks and ferrous metal = yellow sparks. I'm not sure i'm happy going near them with a grinder so hoping their weight will give up their identity.

Alu retainers seem to be around 7-8grams and titanium 10-12grams.

Titanium can be "slightly" magnetic with a strong enough magnet.

                neodymium magnet and no attraction.

weights are probably indicative of aluminium though the scales i was using were not totally convincing... 7grams then weight again and the same part weighs 9 grams! Oh well, it would have been too good to be true if they were titanium so I shall carry on with the standard parts and be sure of reliability.

                cheers

Try and press a point into them - from a scribe or something similar. Titanium is pretty tough, you won’t be able to mark it very easily without impacting it
