yeah but i have read that these are not a reliable solution so guessing after it being in service for 15 years and 180,000 miles i should probably see if i can source a newbie to start with and then consider a rebuild as a secondary option

      Cheers for the reply though

Racks aren't cheap unfort - I *just* missed out on a consignment of these from a parts clearance place way back when. They were selling them for ****** all - actually advertised on eBay as for the Cabrio but the part number was same as S2. There was a batch of 10 mint that went for something like £300 IIRC - I was so annoyed to miss that one. It was some years ago mind.

Good luck getting it sorted... That will be a gnarly job.

i remember those yeah.....can anyone confirm any rack part numbers known to fit the s2? there were a couple on ebay for reasonable money but both said they dont fit. I'm not sure if thats because the number say no or actually it cant be easily made to fit....?

This is one i was looking at but 4 rings say no fit...cant see a reason why...maybe splines on the box or something....? seeing at the fit is for coupes/cabs and 80's seems odd that it wont bolt up to an s2

          http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...2213&rd=1&rd=1

Seems to me that they all fit up the same so i guess its down to connections for fluid and the ratios maybe/

HEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLP Please....seemingly part of the s2 which the forum doesnt hold much info on.

          Cheers

They are not all the same, some are more powerful the others.

I know for a fact that any of the PAS racks from the same era 80 will fit - Audi will tell you that the S2 part is unique and de-listed, only because of the pants servotronic, which any self-respecting 3B driver will have disconnected anyway. There is no other difference.

Get yourself a patent rack from GSF or similar, that's what I did.

Another tip - replace ALL of the bolts and brackets when you put the new rack in - the old bolts connecting the rack to the collumn will be completely nadgered with play in them, and you'll regret not swapping them out if you don't. I posted a thread about this once under "Tramlining".

I picked up an ABY rack on ebay last year for £75, like you said it was listed as an "Audi 80 cabrio rack" The guy i bought it from won it on another ebay auction for £50 and then sold it to me, he had no clue what it was for :mischeif:

Reason i bought it was the ratio, S2 rack has less turns lock to lock then the cq20v rack, not sure whats in a 3B.

                  CQ20v Ratio: 16.8:1
                  S2 ABY Ratio: 14.5:1

                  Mark.
