    HELP! Radiator needed fast!

If anyone has a radiator suitable for an ABY and is in the Bristol / Gloucester area then please contact me now. Genuine if possible.

    Rant:-

Aren't cars great! The old girl has had money lavished on her for quite some time and was starting to drive just right... until yesterday .

Had a coolant leak develop and managed to lose half the header tank in 20 miles . Thankfully there was coolant all over the under tray so I'm hoping that the HG is ok. On investigation there was no obvious leaks from any of the pipes etc. and no runs of coolant leading to the pool of coolant on the undertray.

The coolant was dripping from the lower rad mounting and nowhere else... On closer inspection it looked as though the rad itself was leaking . ********. So I decided to remove the rad (at a mate's house, rather than help him with his car!) and have a closer look. Basically, I'm fairly sure that the lower rad mounting has stress fractured near the weld / rivets (there's visible cracking and movement on the join). I've had a go at applying some solder to it as a short term bodge but I really need another one to test that it's the problem. With the rad out it was fairly clear that there was nothing else leaking.

The rad was replaced in Dec 2004 and has managed a whopping 25000 miles. What a sack of *****. It's a Nissens one and the quality is fairly appauling. As a result, I'm not really too keen to hot-foot it down to my local ECP / GSF and shell out £120+vat for another one, just for that to go after 2 years, radiators aren't really supposed to be a service item FFS!

A nice shiney VAG one would be best but with it being a bank holiday, and most Audi parts departments not having the faintest idea what an S2 is, let along carry stock for it (except P Daddy of course) I can't see me getting one in time for my Nurburgring trip next weekend! Why does the old girl decide to throw a hissy fit at a time like this! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! (must remain calm...).

    Rant over.

At least it did'nt go halfway round the 'ring otherwise you would have been fubar'ed!

GSF will sell you an OEM Behr radiator. Search posts from either Jamo or Steve (fatty) on the proper Behr part number to quote at GSF.
It's exactly the same as the one from Audi, just without the Audi markings. Plastic end tanks and sooooo much better quality the the rubbish Nissens one.

Hi, are these back in stock now then? I heard on the forum that they were no longer stocking the superior behr item. Only nissen ones from now on.

Also pretty sure they come under the same part number from gsf. You need to actually ask for a behr radiator.

GSF Newcastle said they could sell me one the other week (2 weeks ago IIRC) when I enquired for someone. Otherwise don't know Brian.

Just quoted the reference number to GSF Cheltenham from this thread http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...highlight=behr and had a chat with the chap. The part number he had listed is the Nissens one. No faffing chance I'm getting that bag of cr@p again! Will have to wait until Tuesday and see if I can source either a Behr one, genuine one or a suitable 2nd hand one to get me to Germany and back. Feckers!

GSF have stopped stocking them until levels of the Nissens have run down.

They can get them but it's a special order and not on the shelf or you have to find a branch which still has the Behr in stock. (they make more money on the Nisse sh*t one)

The head offices of Birmingham and Heathrow dont have any.

Tried Pete at Quattro Corner yesterday and he was aware of the problems with the Nissens rad. Will have to get cracking on Tuesday if I want to solve this problem before the 'ring trip. Otherwise, I'll have to borrow Stu's rad!!

                        Andy,

If all else fails then get it re-cored at a rediator specialist. Got mine done that way and it's been fine. Also a bit cheaper.

If you can get a Behr one though you may as well go for that.

                        Hope you get it sorted.

                        Dan

Bad luck mate, those nissens ones really are sh*te then, thought the one I bought and fitted before christmas looked rubbish quality. Think the dealership price was £230 ish when I enquired, hence I went for the GSF option...

I had to fit a nissen one in the end on mine, the one I have isnt too bad. I just had to put a fibre washer on the bleeding nipple on the top of it, its been fine otherwise.

Is the the plastic top which is broken on yours or the core which is knackered? If it is the core get in touch with kempston radiators, they recently re cored my aux rad and did a very good job of it and it was only a few days turnaround

Sorry Andy, I've been out and about the last couple of days, but I set to the car this morning. What a PITA those plastic cowlings are, and why do I insist on keeping the A/C?
                              Anyway here's your back-up radiator:
